Due to my 6 month internship, my graduation was delayed by a semester. Thus, I had an extra Summer for an internship. After searching for opportunities related to manufacturing and design, I wound up accepting a position with the Metrology group. I relocated to Chicago for the Summer to work in Shure's Niles, Illinois facility.Throughout my internship, I gained experience with a Zeiss CMM, Hexagon Absolute Arm, and an NSI CT Scanner. Additionally, I worked with an experienced team of Metrology Engineers to learn the fundamentals of Metrology. My main project was focused on creating a CT Calibration artifact. An ISO standard laid out the requirements which the artifact needed to adhere to. To start, I created a parametric model for my artifact. From that parametric model, I derived parametric equations which defined the lengths called out in the ISO standard. Finally, I created a Python script which iterated across each of the CAD model's parameters in a nested for loop to find combinations of parameters which satisfied the requirements laid out in the ISO standard. The design was sent off for manufacturing. However, the prototype was not complete before the end of my internship, so I did not have the opportunity to verify the CT scanner's performance. My internship with Shure was a great experience. I was able to make use of my CAD and Python skills while developing new skills everyday. Also I found a new passion for a field that was foreign to me. Prior to this internship, I didn't know much about Metrology. However, it feels like a perfect fit for me as I sought opportunities at the intersection of manufacturing, design, and analysis.
Chandler, Arizona, United States
In addition to my 6 month internship with Northrop Grumman, I returned the following summer to complete a 3 month internship with the Dynamic Environments group. Once again, I worked with the Dynamic Environments group to analyze shock and vibration levels for launch vehicles and components. The team was based out of Chandler, Arizona, but I elected to complete my internship remotely. Some of my tasks included: deriving transfer functions to redefine zonal vibration loads, diagnosing sources of conservatism in random vibration models, and processing raw accelerometer time histories into power spectral density curves and shock response spectra.
Chandler, Arizona
After my second year at Purdue, I accepted an offer for a 6 month internship with Northrop Grumman at their Chandler, Arizona facility. During my time with Northrop Grumman I had the opportunity to work with the Dynamic Environments group with a diverse team of engineers. Within the group, I worked on deriving and analyzing shock and vibration levels for launch vehicles and components. Some of my tasks included: creating finite element models, analyzing shock data from land transportation of launch vehicle components, deriving component specific shock and vibration levels, writing analyses to release derived shock and vibration levels, and writing Python scripts to aid in a number of tasks.Through my work with Northrop Grumman, I was able to build my analytical skill set, further develop my communication skills, and develop a deep interest in a new field. Prior to this internship, I had no experience working with shock or vibration loads. However, I was able to make real contributions to the team within a 6 month internship. The experience gave me confidence that I could fill any role given the proper resources and environment.
Indianapolis, Indiana Area
Following my first year at Purdue, I accepted an internship with DLZ. I spent the summer working at DLZ's Indianapolis office as an HVAC and Plumbing intern. I had the opportunity to work under two experienced Professional Engineers and learn the basics of HVAC and Plumbing design. Some of my tasks for the summer included: drawing HVAC plans in AutoCAD, sizing systems of pipe, routing pipes through buildings, or creating sheets for a project submittal.Through this experience, I gained practice with AutoCAD and Revit, and I learned the importance of communication and coordination in a team oriented environment.
