About Ariel Haziot
My background education includes:- an engineer degree in physics with a specialization in Material science, - a master in physics followed by a PhD in experimental low temperature physics,My working experience could be separated into 2 periods: - 5 years in an academic environment as an experimental physicist in France and in the US, studying solid helium- 6 years as an R&D engineer working on cryogenics systems at the institute Neel in Grenoble and then on superconducting magnets at CERN.During my phD, I studied dislocation motion in solid helium. I designed and built devices to measure the shear modulus of single crystals using acoustic technics with piezoelectric transducers. We discovered that, in the absence of impurities and in below 400mK, helium-4 crystals present a giant plasticity that is anisotropic and reversible making the crystal anomalously soft. This plasticity disappears as soon as traces of helium-3 impurities bind to the dislocations. At Penn State, I studied the mass flow through solid Helium. I built a sandwich of liquid, solid and liquid phase and measured the pressure in the liquid regions. We define a boundary surface of superfluid mass flow through the solid, which in many aspects reminds the critical surface of superconductors. Then, I was hired by ESA as an Engineer to work on a project of a dilution cryostat for space applications. I have built and tested a prototype model with a team of physicists, engineers and technicians and in collaboration with national space agencies in France, Japan or the Netherland. Finally at my current position at CERN, I have been a project engineer on 2 projects: - An HTS demonstrator magnet for GaToroid, a new type of gantry for hadron therapy- Fusillo, a demonstrator of large aperture, strongly curved CCT magnet for compact acceleratorsIn both, projects I am participating to all steps of magnet design and fabrication from the specifications to the cold test.
