About Ahmed Malik

I'm an engineer that cares deeply about our planet. Our Earth is a giant, complex system. On one hand, literally: It is fundamentally a thermostat that recalibrates and corrects itself over millenia. But also abstractly, where the Earth is composed of smaller, interconnected systems that govern social, economic, climatic, and technological challenges.I have keen interests in automotive/transportation and autonomous systems, climate action and technologies, and computational science, particularly for the advancement of Astrophysics. I enjoy tackling challenging problems that meld computational analysis/modeling and systems engineering, and are electro-mechanical in nature, where I can appreciate the direct connection to the physical world around us.Transportation is a global, social challenge and our Earth can no longer sustain our reliance on personal vehicles. I envision a world where humans opt to engage with the environment and Earth around them, rather than simply driving through it. This begins by creating a world where nobody necessarily needs to own a car. But, this cannot happen overnight, nor, perhaps, in a single generation, so there are two primary stop-gaps towards that goal. First, build the infrastructure to enable and support ubiquitous electric vehicles and wean ourselves off the usage of fossil fuels, and second, safely deploy autonomy within transportation systems. From there, we revamp our cities to support and encourage pedestrians to use safe, efficient mass-transit.Engineering is far more a social problem than a technical one. We can absolutely create a world where efficiency doesn't detriment the environment. Exciting and enabling humans to walk everywhere — to engage with their environment — is a major step in that direction.

  • Intel Corporation
    Firmware Engineer
    Intel Corporation Jun 2020 - May 2021
    Santa Clara, California, Us
Worked with a small team to ensure robustness of SSD firmware by supporting integration and validation efforts, performing functional testing, root causing failures by analyzing UART logs, and developing device features in source code
  • Intel Corporation
    Product Development Engineering Intern
    Intel Corporation Jan 2019 - May 2020
    Santa Clara, California, Us
    • Developed Python software tool to aid in SSD PCIe and NVMe protocol debug by analyzing bus traffic and providing statistics on the power- and link-state changes• Debugged SSD PCIe and NVMe protocol issues using protocol analyzer
  • Berkeley Formula Racing (Fsae)
    Lead Electrical Engineer
Berkeley Formula Racing (Fsae) Jun 2017 - Jun 2019
For the 2018 and 2019 seasons I led and co-led — respectively — a team of 3 engineers to design and manufacture the racecars' wiring harnesses, sensor suite, and data acquisition pipeline. In 2019, we greatly improved the vehicle's stamina to survive a 22km endurance race by manufacturing our team's most reliable and modular wiring harness to-date, helping us take 16th place overall out of 80 teams. Some highlights from my team as lead include:• Root causing the vehicle failure that cost us the 2017 competition endurance race by carefully analyzing the data and developing a test plan to reproduce race conditions• Supporting the integration of strain gages for downforce and axle shock-load measurements• Implementing processes to ensure wiring harness robustness on the bench and on the vehicle• Improving ease-of-access to power-critical and sensor-data components of the wiring harness with more thoughtful harness design
  • Berkeley Formula Racing (Fsae)
    Electrical Subsystem Member
Berkeley Formula Racing (Fsae) Jan 2016 - Jun 2017
Berkeley Formula Racing is a team that competes in the annual Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) colegiate competition, in which we design, manufacture, and race a formula-style racecar powered by an internal combustion engine. During my time as an electrical subsystem member, I:• Helped manufacture the wiring harnesses for the 2016 and 2017 racecars• Assisted with dynamic testing to collect data integral to validate and improve vehicle dynamics• Designed and fabricated a proof-of-concept Arduino-powered RPM-gauge component for the dashboard that indicated to the driver when to shift gears; it was used as the basis for more robust designs in later years
  • Finelite
    Software Engineering Intern
    Finelite Jun 2018 - Aug 2018
    Union City, Ca, Us
Developed software in Python to automate the creation of wiring diagrams for industrial luminaires
  • University Of California, San Diego
    Student Researcher
University Of California, San Diego Jul 2013 - Aug 2013
    La Jolla, Ca, Us
Over the course of 4 weeks, I, along with 3 other members, designed, built, and programmed a kinetic sculpture (marble rollercoaster) with the goals to experimentally explain the laws of motion and conservation of energy and momentum, extract energy loss data, and allow human interaction with the sculpture.I focused on the programming of the catapult mechanism that double as an interactive feature and allowed human players to shoot the marble from one end of the track into a basket on the other end - if they timed their shot correctly. The code was written using RobotC.I also worked on the design of a magnetic version of "Newton's Cradle" that illustrated the effects of momentum between a moving an stationary object. At the end of the 4 weeks, we presented our research to UCSD faculty via a poster cataloguing our data and design process. To view my research, visit: http://bit.ly/1MyxGtf or https://sites.google.com/a/eng.ucsd.edu/2013-team-5/
