The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a highly conserved serine/threonine protein kinase that responds to a variety of intra- and extracellular signals to adjust the balance of major anabolic and catabolic functions to the metabolic needs of the cell. Two major effects induced by mTOR kinase activity are inhibition of autophagy (catabolic) and stimulation of 5’ cap-dependent protein translation (anabolic). Inhibition of mTOR has been shown to be protect DA neurons in mice exposed to neurtoxins that cause Parkinsonian-like symptoms through the selective destruction of DA cells. Dr. MacKenzie has recently genetically deleted mTOR from DA neurons and is studying the effects of the deletion on the phenotype of these cells. I was involved in identifying the mice for study by genotyping and developed the skillls to run DNA isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis. I also participated in the study of these neurons by fluorescence microscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography/electrochemical detection.

I worked in a lab directed by Dr. Menqjer Lee in the Department of Pathology. I conducted research on S1P signaling in vascular functions. I have experience in PCR, cell cultures, and western blots.
