Teaching, Research, and Service. I teach steel design, structural stability, plastic design, seismic design of steel structures, finite element method, mechanics of materials, and structural analysis. My team includes several graduate students, post-docs, research engineers, and technicians. Together we investigate the fundamental behavior of steel and steel-concrete composite structures subjected to extreme events such as earthquakes, fire, blast, or multi-hazard combinations. We conduct experimental investigations at the large-scale structures Bowen Laboratory, and develop and benchmark numerical models to simulate experimental behavior and failure modes. The experimental and numerical results are synthesized and simplified into design guidelines that can be used in engineering practice to achieve appropriate level of safety, reliability, and security. I work with various professional organizations such as the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC) etc. to disseminate these guidelines to our profession.
