As of May 2023, I am an alumnus of Colgate University with a major concentration in geography and a minor in Spanish. Since the beginning of my last year as a Colgate student, I have held two GIS research positions. While a student, I worked as a program intern for the Office of Student Involvement; played in the Pep Band and University Orchestra; helped to implement projects for Students for Environmental Action (SEA); supported cultural and social events; and volunteered at Pre-orientation, Arrival Day, and Orientation programming. In my free time, I enjoyed going to sporting events; attending events hosted by various student organizations on campus, such as those at Colgate's ALANA Cultural Center; and going to support friends at concerts and other performances. I am always curious about the intersection of the natural and anthropogenic facets of the world and seeking to understand my own role in fostering the best possible relationship between people and our environment through research and sustainable practices. The geography program at Colgate exposed me to a wide range of human and environmental geographic disciplines ranging from climatology and Earth sciences to political ecology, geographies of human settlement, and mobility studies. My final research paper reflects my interest in public transportation, as it examines the successes and failures of high-speed rail travel and its potential to improve various kinds of geospatial and social mobilities for people in the United States. Likewise, the Spanish program empowered me to learn the language as I never had before through literature and everyday cultural context, which has given me a better understanding of English in its many varieties as well. I also took two semesters of German and learned more than I would have expected from such little time. By the time I arrived at Colgate, I had taken six years of French, four semesters of which were at the collegiate level. I enjoy the study of language and would be thrilled if my future work entailed it somehow. My OSI job entailed event planning; help with administrative tasks concerning student organizations; collaboration with committees on campus programming; graphic design; sorting office materials; and several other responsibilities. It was highly rewarding to witness and participate in the inner workings of campus programming. My work thus far has shown me that I find my greatest sense of purpose in contributing to experiences that bring people together, bring joy to them, and encourage them to learn from each other.
