Pharmacist with a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD focused in Molecular Biology from Queen's University Belfast. My research project investigated the role of USP17 (a ubiquitin specific protease/USP), as potential novel therapeutic target in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). In addition, I also investigated USP17’s role as a secretory hub. Overall, my research has significantly enhanced our understanding of the role of USP17 in NSCLC, in relation to the trafficking of EGFR mutants, and over-coming Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) drug resistance in NSCLC. Furthermore, my research was the first to identify USP17’s role in the secretory process, and has revealed many new exciting avenues of research relating to USP17’s importance in cell biology and in metastatic processes, specifically regarding to lysosome trafficking, and lysosomal protease secretion, in addition, to autophagic processes and potentially exosome and cytokine secretion.Overall, this research has been carried out using a wide range of biomolecular and cell-based techniques involved in examining the role of USP17. These included: aseptic cell culture techniques, transient transfections, Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), confocal analysis, screening of cell line performance by ELISA assay, SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting, PCR and many other in vitro assay techniques. Throughout my PhD, I’ve also developed excellent scientific writing and presentation skills.In my personal life, I am a keen interest in personal fitness, and have many hobbies which include music (guitar and drums), golf and martial arts (jiu jitsu).
