Database AdministrationDatabase administration has changed extensively in the 30 years or so I have been working in this area. Manual running of scripts and interventions requiring periodic downtime has been mostly replaced by automated tools, (on the whole) more reliable software and less, if any, need for application outage due to ‘database problems'. Achieving this is about a DBA ensuring robust systems are in place to pre-empt those problems. Please see my github repository linked in the profile for examples of those systems. Complex batch systemsMy clients have often had extensive batch processing systems. These tend to degrade over time as functionality is added (but rarely taken away) and data volumes increase (and rarely decrease). Scripts/programs that were fine years ago don't always scale. Identifying and dealing with bottlenecks to allow these systems to function without necessarily needing more and more resources is a focus of mine. Training/Mentoring/CommunicationThe training covers both introductory and advanced SQL and language courses for the business and technical community.The focus is on problem solving and real life experience. Long before remote learning became the norm due to Covid I have delivered hybrid courses - some students in class, some remote and have experience in managing and engaging with both. Communication skills are just as important as technical skills, even more so as the world moves to outsourcing.
