Here I am, outside in the middle of the woods, covered in dirt, sunscreen, bug spray, and who knows what else as I prepare to endure another hour of volunteer work. When it comes to invasive shrub removal and gardening, the typical volunteer is the biology major or environmental specialist. Yet, with nearly 400 hours of volunteer work under my belt, I chuckle at the surprise others have when they find that I study finance. Although such work might initially seem unrelated to my field, it has not only bettered the environment but has also taught me valuable skills in leadership and communication. Every day, I do volunteer work, I lead, I teach, and I grow as I hear the stories of others around me. Now that I'm finally ready to jump into my career head first, I can combine my love for math and economics with my leadership, communication, and passion to enrich those around me in the workforce.
