Ailbhe Cunningham MRIAI is an architect, printmaker and photographer from Cork. She is co-creator of the TEST SITE project. Ailbhe continues to work in private practice. While studying Architecture at TUDublin, Ailbhe progressed a research interest in the enhancement of natural urban environments. Since graduating in 2015 Ailbhe has expanded this research. She uses the city for testing and challenging regenerative, urban placemaking ideas. Collaboration is core to her practice – Ailbhe works with local community groups, artists and built environment specialists. Ailbhe creates visuals to initiate conversations about sustainable, urban regeneration.

A diverse range of experience contributes to her research approach including careers in the arts, nursing, organic farming, product design, and cross-disciplinary sustainable design development. Her consultancy, desireland, focuses on the socio-cultural relationships that influence human well-being within the built environment and the promotion of integrated healthcare systems.Bí URBAN was a unique two day process of participatory research partnering six urban beekeeping projects with representatives from social projects, academics, professionals and citizens resident in Dublin’s Northwest Inner City, to create a hyperactive learning environment and foster trans-disciplinary exchange.Participants used the principals of the bee colony as a starting point to explore the following themes:- Strengthening local, national and international networking and resource sharing.- Developing ICT architecture and mapping strategies for the mutual benefit of all.- Providing a case study to support the development of Citizen Science methodology and application.

In their thesis year, the students responded to a brief devised by their school as part of a collaboration with IDA Ireland - an organisation responsible for attracting foreign direct investment to Ireland. The brief asks the students to investigate the Irish city of Waterford, the country’s fifth largest city. Presented are both strategic urban visions for the city and architectural proposals with viable, potential investors. The results are a wide variety of typologies that all interpret the idea of “Working Life” in contemporary society.INDUSTRIA includes the curation of a travelling exhibition, the publication of a 300 page research document and the coordination of a day long symposium.

Over 200 third-level students and graduates of various design disciplines from around the world will participate in a variety of workshops that foster the development of design, communication, leadership, technical and social skills in a dynamic multi-cultural environment. These workshops are based on collaborative and co-operative learning, affording participants great opportunities in terms of skill and idea sharing. For many, it is of great benefit to engage in such an informal learning process to complement their more prescribed traditional educational program.
