I initially practiced medicine in Okinawa at the Kadena Air Base Acute Care Service, culminating as the Director of Acute Care Services. This early interest in emergency and general primary care has continued into my later career as I remained in the reserve components of the Air Force. I came to Birmingham for an Anesthesiology residency, followed by brief private practice in general anesthesiology, and later return to UAB for a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. Philip McArdle, MD was the single strongest mentor influencing my decision to practice as an intensivist, and later to become faculty at UAB in the ICU. In 2007 I started a balanced employee/contractor practice model. I entered a multi-specialty intensive care group with the Leap Frog Group model at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge and began independent contracting in Anesthesiology in a growing operating room practice at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, WV. Both practices were growing and innovative and were in hospitals at the top 10% of patient safety nationwide. Particularly exciting was seeing the development of a vibrant open heart program at Mon General. State of the art critical care at MMCOR was very pleasing professionally. I would say that Charles Mascioli, MD in critical care, and Kenneth McNeil in anesthesiology had a strong mentoring influence, building quality programs with financial sustainability. In 2011 I restructered my consulting to include emergency medicine coverage as I was asked to lead the developing CERFP of Alabama. In order to help get the disaster response unit up and running, I focused professional efforts in the Southeast with less travel and playing a back-up role at my existing practices. In August 2012, I took a position as Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine at UAB, assisting with ICU development and expansion. My ultimate goal is to return to the Pacific Region to practice medicine and participate in medical missions."
