 In a room full of talent, I’ve come to find, there are some people who present their pieces and their words evoke a certain stillness inside of you. As soon as Aileen would read her work out loud, her words quickly created a world for me where nothing else existed. I was captivated in the classroom, and would consistently lean in to listen.

 When we received edits on our pieces from fellow classmates, Aileen’s feedback would be the first one I would sift through among the stacks.

 On Aileen’s last day of class, she stopped me outside of the brick building where our workshop was held. I recall her telling me that I was meant to teach people and she encouraged me to keep writing. At that moment, she made me feel seen and appreciated and I was honored. I was so touched by her words that immediately after, I called my mother back home and cried about it.
 And without her knowing it, Aileen’s words resonated with me years later and pushed me to never give up on my own hopes of becoming a writer. "
