I worked on a team of five students to create a convolutional neural network model, web application, and showcase presentation. The objective of the project was to detect diabetic retinopathy and the stage (proliferative vs. non-proliferative) from a large dataset of retinal fundus images. The web application takes an image as an input and predicts the diagnosis based on the inputted image. The project was presented at the Canadian Undergraduate Conference on Artificial Intelligence in a showcase format.

My main goal was to support the creation of a new researcher-focused platform, which is a multi-year project. The current system forces researchers to use multiple apps and forms. The goal of the new system is to store everything in one place. I wrote detailed user stories on the functionality of a variety of aspects to help the initial development. When completed, I presented these user stories to internal and external development teams. When this project was put on hold, I started working on an Intranet redevelopment project because the current Intranet is out of date and difficult to navigate. Using data analytics tools, I reviewed and reported on the Intranet statistics for each department. I also created and hosted workshops to help the departments organize their content for a better Intranet. Simultaneously, I was assigned to an internal billing process project to design an app that reduced the manual workload during billing periods. This project also included workshops. I designed an initial prototype for the application that was presented to an internal development team. This position provided an experience that integrated healthcare and research with software. I was able to collaborate with healthcare professionals and researchers, allowing me to discuss practical applications of artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry.

    Digital Analytics Student
    Queen'S University May 2022 - Aug 2022

I analyzed Queen’s University websites and social media data using a variety of software tools. From this information, I created presentations summarizing the data for the corresponding department. I also offered recommendations on website aspects that could be changed to reach their goals (more traffic, longer time on the site, further scroll depth etc.). For each department, I created and maintained dashboards of the data to share with them. My final project was to research the Voice of Customer and how it could be implemented at University Relations. The team wanted feedback on the websites from real users. I found multiple solutions and reached out to software companies to request demonstrations. I created and presented a slideshow deck on the Voice of Customer, its benefits, why we should implement it in this department at Queen’s, and how we should do so. The head of the department agreed with my ideas, and they are now using Hotjar to gather feedback on major websites. This position strengthened my analytical skills and provided me with experience in business relations. I conducted valuable research and improved my presentation and communication skills.

    Engineering Intern

I worked on the engineering team at a manufacturing plant. I conducted daily machine inspections and ordered parts for repairs. Since it was the summer and there was no air conditioning in the plant, I installed and set up the software for temperature and humidity sensors around the plant. They reported on the conditions in the plant and detected when it was unsafe to work, which indicated more breaks for the employees. One of the processes required workers to carry a heavy load a far distance to be able to place it into the machine, which caused neck and back strain and was inefficient. I designed a system with a hydraulic lift table and conveyor belt that would transport the load to the machine, so the worker was significantly less strained. This position provided me with experience on a real engineering team that had daily issues to resolve. I was able to apply many skills I have learned during my engineering undergraduate degree. My career goal is to be a machine learning engineer, so this position exposed me to the engineering industry outside of the classroom.
