Launched in January 2016, I founded the Airline Management Group, which both diagnoses and delivers solutions for the strategic needs of start ups, legacy airlines, especially for medium-sized and smaller nations. It leverages my own knowledge and extensive network of professional airline industry contacts. More than a strategy house, the company delivers practical support for senior leaders as together they implement disruptive changes, encompassing cost reductions, political and industrial stakeholder management, shareholders, international agencies, the media and the organisation of the airline itself. The key services of this new force in airline strategy, led by some of the industry’s most respected names, include:• “Real world” strategic business plans created by industry leaders who have led major changes in businesses like yours.• A commitment, as long as it takes, to see change succeed, well beyond the initial implementation phase. • Subject matter expertise in the particular demands of small airlines in a market increasingly dominated by merged giants, low cost monoliths and alliances. • A management platform utilising best-in-class operating procedures, ensuring the mist efficient possible delivery plus additional revenue, securing a sustainable future.

Headhunted by Spencer Stuart, I led this €250m, 1,800 staff business, one of the biggest in the country and a strategic asset for the country’s main foreign currency earner, its tourism industry. I inherited a business losing up to €70m per annum and facing bankruptcy. My achievements included:• Swiftly developing a turnaround plan to tackle the main issues of low-cost carrier competition, union influence, poor IT and the absence of a modern, responsive, customer focused business culture. • Creating a strong relationship supporting change with the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Chairman of the Board of Directors, ensuring political support for this major national issue. • Successfully negotiating the European Commission’s strict rules to enable €138m in state aid, allowing a return to solvency, funding 500 redundancies, a rebranding exercise and a culture change. • Eliminating the €70m per annum deficit (50% from new revenue, 50% from savings) and returning the business to a €6.25m operating profit in the first half of 2013/2014. • Redesigning the organisation to deliver in-house business critical functions (including engineering) while cost-effectively outsourcing others, and becoming one of Europe’s most punctual regional airlines. • Negotiating €35m of cost savings with four unions, while renegotiating supplier contracts, introducing fuel hedging and improving aircraft utilization. • Leading the creation of, and relocation to, state-of-the-art offices for Air Malta, enabling modern work practices, the use of fit-for-purpose IT and a more flexible, dynamic style of working.
  • Air Southwest
    Chief Executive Officer (Ceo)
    Air Southwest Feb 2009 - Mar 2011
Operating routes between the English South West and London, this was a £25m business. My role was to help the business cope with changing market conditions, including increased completion on their most profitable route. My selected achievements included:• Launched a profitable new route with London City Airport adding connectivity to the South West.• Designed a strategic counter-response package to the threat from Flybe, costed at £4m, which would have enabled Air Southwest to fend off this competition. • Built increased online booking capacity which boosted sales, while enabling closer partnerships.• Created a partnership with another regional airline to benefit from economies of scale and code sharing, leading to a successful disposal.
  • Caribbean Airlines Ltd.(Formerly Bwia)
    Chief Executive Officer (Ceo)
    Caribbean Airlines Ltd.(Formerly Bwia) Feb 2006 - Jan 2008
    Piarco, Tt
BWIA was a legacy destination airline which by 2006 was losing $150m per annum on a $600m turnover. Operating long and short haul routes, it employed 2,400 staff. My assignment was to turnaround its performance and save a strategic asset for the country. I reported to the Prime Minister. My achievements included:• Designed, in two weeks, a realistic turnaround plan and started sourcing an international team of experts to deliver it, including an industry leading operational platform. • Persuaded the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to close BWIA and launch a brand new airline (Caribbean Airways) in around three months. • Succeeded in opening Caribbean Airways by 1st January 2007, transferring people, aircraft, ground facilities, numerous legal agreements (including airport slots), and winning the US FAA’s support. • Maintained BWIA’s services up to 1st January 2007, despite half the workforce being destined for redundancy, requiring close management, careful leadership and union negotiations. • Achieved financial breakeven in three months and a profit of approximately $4m per annum in seven months, with an increasingly positive cash flow.
  • Sn Brussels Airlines
    Chief Executive Officer (Ceo)
Sn Brussels Airlines Feb 2002 - Dec 2005
    Diegem, Be
This was the successor airline to the failed Belgian national flag carrier Sabena. Started with a €146m investment, the business was burning cash and was down to €90m when I was brought in to turnaround the situation. The main challenge was making a leadership team dominated by Sabena’s public sector culture more commercial and client centric. My achievements included:• Created a new sense of leadership, purpose, commercial direction and new initiatives to develop revenue, which led to a turnaround in the company’s financial situation. • Greatly improved the speed of financial reporting to the board by working with two university professors to produce accurate and rapid month-end approximations of the position. • Negotiated diplomatically and over time with the airline’s unions to change working practices allowing greater commercial flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing client expectations. • Developed and implemented new marketing techniques, changing the perception of the company, stressing Brussels’ role at the centre of Europe and the airline’s role in serving it. • Expanded into new, profitable routes flying to West Africa, while pruning less useful flights in Western Europe, including earning €35m from a new code sharing relationship for London Heathrow.
