I've been passionate about animals from a very early age, and have spent much of my life reading - and watching - everything I could to further my knowledge and understanding of them. It's hard to think of an aspect of my life that hasn't been affected by a love for creatures and their ecological value, as well as their intrinsic worth as living beings. My love for animals, both wild and domestic, encompasses not only welfare, rehabilitation, and conservation, but researching behavior, cognition, and the emotional lives of non-human animals. Over the years, I have applied this devotion to various independent hobbies, including birdwatching, wildlife tracking, and camera trapping, and have many years of experience as a pet owner and animal advocate. My volunteer experience includes two raptor rehabilitation centers, a center for rehabilitation of native Virginian wild mammals, and fostering cats and dogs in search of homes. I maintained a very informal blog during my internship at one raptor center, and found that I really love making zoology accessible and entertaining to audiences without scientific backgrounds. One key to ensuring animal welfare and conservation is in public education, and giving everyone a reason to see animals as important - whether because they're fascinating, or vital to their ecosystems, or because they have value on an emotional level. I'm skilled at animal care, handling, and behavioral observation, and proficient in identifying mammal and bird species. While I love all animals, I have a strong affinity for carnivorans, particularly canids, felids, bears, and the woefully underappreciated mustelids, from river otter to least weasel. I'm also very fond of raptors and corvids. I graduated from WVU with a degree in wildlife biology, and from here I am committed to learning more, gaining new skills, and sharing knowledge in pursuit of making a difference for animals.
