Cell Biology Research AssistantUniversity Of Waterloo Jan 2024 - Jun 2024Waterloo, Ontario, CanadaI contributed to groundbreaking research on the evolutionary origins of multicellularity by studying the role of voltage-gated calcium channels in the Choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta. This unicellular organism is the closest living relative to animals and serves as a model for understanding the mechanisms that might have been involved in early animal evolution. Our first manuscript on choanoflagellates is in press to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, USA, a high-impact journal. Additionally, I presented a poster on my research findings at the Laurier Research Symposium, highlighting the significance of calcium channels in choanoflagellates.Responsibilities: 1. Conducted localization studies of the L-type calcium channel SroCav1 across various life stages of Salpingoeca rosetta.2. Utilized custom polyclonal antibodies and protocols from UC Berkeley to study calcium channels.3. Analyzed the structure and function of voltage-gated calcium channels and their subunits.4. Investigated how environmental stimuli trigger calcium ion influx, affecting cellular processes such as adhesion, motility, and gene expression.5. Collaborated to contribute to the broader understanding of calcium channel functions in eukaryotes and early multicellular life forms.Achievements: 1. Enhanced understanding of the evolutionary significance of calcium channels in unicellular and multicellular organisms.2. Provided insights into the ancestral functions of calcium channels before the emergence of complex nervous and muscle systems.3. Contributed to the body of knowledge on the transition from single-celled to multicellular organisms.4. Presented research findings at the Laurier Research Symposium, showcasing the role of calcium channels in choanoflagellates and their evolutionary implications.5. Contributed to a manuscript on choanoflagellates in press to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, USA. -
