Greater Boston Area
* Led Detector Operations to maintain high detector livetimes and performed software maintenance and development in C++, Python, and Bash, for data processing, monitoring, and data transfer from the South Pole* Communicated operational statistics to international team members, and solicited and implemented feature requests
Brussels Area, Belgium
* Led daily Detector Operations of a remote Antarctic telescope. This involved developing and implementing a data processing and transmission pipeline in C++, Python, Bash to process, filter, archive, and transmit data from a remote station to a data warehouse in the North; additionally developing monitoring software in Bash and Python to characterize key dataset features to understand dataset quality, detector performance and failure modes, resulting in increased livetime from 70% to over 90%. Implemented SQL databases to streamline processing and monitoring. * Developed and implemented feature-extraction algorithms in C++ in order to reduce daily datasets of 15GB by 99.5% prior to transmission * Performed a study in Python using scikit-learn on an HTCondor cluster comparing the use of support vector machines to boosted decision trees for event classification.* Performed on-site calibration and repair of the radio array at the South Pole in order to improve the ability of scientists to detect radio emission from neutrinos interacting with the Polar ice sheet* Used DSP methods in Python to analyse RF data from a test of a novel radar method to detect high-energy particles in ice* Constructed a multi-antenna radio array and data acquisition system to investigate RF properties of electromagnetic cascades in ice* Took part in electronics R&D efforts focusing on digital clock transfer over fiber optic cable as part of a proposed detector hardware upgrade, including development of a board to test performance of a clock conditioning chip.* Managed weekly phone calls with international collaboration members to coordinate detector operations activities* Received an extremely competitive research fellowship (Chargé de Recherche) from the Belgian Fonds National de Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) with its own research, travel, and equipment funding.
* Developed theoretical models of high-energy astrophysical neutrino sources* Programmed astrophysical source models and detector numerical models in C++ to predict the number of astrophysical neutrinos going through the IceCube detector, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications.* Used probabilistic integration methods in C++ and Python to compute multi-factor particle interactions to accurately predict the sensitivity of IceCube to high-energy neutrinos.* Used Python to characterize the efficiency of feature extraction algorithms on a large data set with an HTCondor computing cluster to improve theoretical predictions of IceCube neutrino detection capability.
Madison, Wi
* Taught two semesters of introductory electromagnetism for engineers and science majors* Led discussion sections and laboratory work* Graded homework, laboratory reports, and examinations
