My responsibilities included the care and welfare of detainees, following relevant legislation both in regards to their treatment, H&S and welfare, best practice policies set by the Home Office, professional bodies and internally. I was responsible for the safe operation of the custody centre, ensuring the facilities, equipment and holding cells meet the required standards, and arranging their repairs where necessary, and completing reports on breaches or potential non-complaince, as well as investigating Near Misses and Non-Compliances reported by other Sergeants.I analysed and manage risks in relation to detainees and the operation of the custody centre. It is a fast-paced, demanding and pressurised role, where timescales are set in law, and solutions and decisions need to be fast and accurate. This is the type of working environment I thrive in.I have to keep accurate written records of everything that occurs in custody, including my own decision making, in an environment where professionalism, courtesy and respect are vital. I work with other agencies inlcuding the NHS and CPS. I am also responsible for the operational supervision of the duty team, including other Sergeants, and line management of staff. I have also mentored and trained police officers, Detectives and custody officers.
