This group has expertise in the area of measuring ileal and total tract energy and nutrient digestibility, and in measuring energy and nutrient balances. This facility is a genetic research farm in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Clemson University. The main focus is to breed a heat-tolerant dairy cattle for counties in the equator belt. I spent my summer there where I had the opportunity to manage a team of interns and provide care for a split herd of 600 head of Angus cattle and Girolando cattle which is a dairy crossbreed of Gyr x Holstein. I also had the chance to breed cattle using AI and assist an embryologist using IVF. We calved out nearly 40 heifers in the summer heat and from this I was able to do a research project. I also took on several managerial duties and animal care duties during my internship in South Carolina.

This facility uses piglets as a human model to research infant formulas to help identify how they will affect a growing child through nutrition and cognition studies. During my time here, I would manage the daily care of the piglets and assist with various cognition studies. I also had the ability to assist with administering MRIs. In addition, I had the chance to work on various poultry studies under the same professor.

The University Dairy Farm is a student ran farm that is home to various research studies by University professors. During my time the herd size fluctuated several times, but on average we milked around 150 head of primarily Holstein cattle. My job duties ranged depending on the shift and I was able to do every job on the farm at one time or another from milking, to calf feeding, barn cleaning to even medicating. This position is where my passion for agriculture, livestock, and the dairy industry began and I am forever grateful for the early morning shifts that made me who I am today! Below are some job duty highlights. • Monitored whole herd health, administered medication as necessary, and formulated feed rations• Bred using artificial insemination in conjunction with heat synchronization methods• Trained approximately 25 new employees on farm SOPs and animal care protocols
