About Andrew Aken, Phd, Cissp

Embarking on my journey in IT, I initially thought I knew everything I needed to know after getting my Bachelor's in Computer Science. After my Master's, I realized there was a lot more that I needed to learn. However, after my PhD, I came to the realization that I didn't know jack. This marked the inception of an extraordinary adventure in the ever-evolving world of technology, shaping a wild and wonderful ride through the realms of IT innovation and leadership.Navigating the complexities of IT, I've embraced the role of a creative thinker who values Emotional Intelligence (EQ), coordination, and flexibility within the workplace. While understanding the significance of fostering a harmonious work environment, I'm unafraid to make tough decisions when the well-being of the company or employees is at stake. My consultative expertise encompasses implementing organizational strategic initiatives, crafting information security architecture, spearheading Zero Trust implementation, conducting Cybersecurity maturity assessments, overseeing risk management, and conducting forensic analysis. These qualities have been integral to my professional journey, ensuring a balanced approach to leadership and decision-making.As a former professor, I mastered the art of translating complex technical concepts into clear business strategies. The skills cultivated in academia—communication, collaboration, and fostering continuous learning— seamlessly integrate into the professional realm. They say laughter is the best medicine, and I inject a healthy dose of humor wherever I go. Whether it elicits groans or brings smiles, I've long held the belief that a touch of humor sparks innovation and collaboration.I am an avid woodworker, musician, and singer (my stage is now relegated to Thursday night karaoke). I also find solace and inspiration in gardening, landscaping, and exploring new cultures through travel.Connect with me if you'd like to learn more about my story or pick my brain—I welcome your connection or DMAreas of Expertise:Strategic Thinking | Communication & Persuasion | Presentation Skills | Business Strategy | Critical Thinking | Innovation | Budgeting & Financial Management | Team Building | Vendor Management & Negotiation | Information Security | Network Security | DevOps | Technology Planning | IT Strategy | IT Infrastructure Design & Implementation | ITIL & IT Service Management (ITSM) | Cloud Migration | Enterprise Architecture Digital Transformation | Cloud Computing | Cloud Migration | Product Development, Product Management, & New Product Rollout

  • Ibm
    Senior Software Engineer
    Ibm Jan 1993 - May 1995
    Armonk, New York, Ny, Us
When I initially started at IBM, I inherited a set of utilities used to build the National Language Versions (NLVs) of several applications developed by IBM. The source for these utilities was intentionally obfuscated by the original programmer to provide him job security. After I decoded the intent of the utilities, I rewrote them from scratch into a single system. Then, after proactively communicating with the stakeholders in the process (software developers, translation center managers, translators, and NLV department personnel), I added features to aid in the translation of the source and reuse previous translations. Eventually, I incorporated machine translation capabilities and WYSIWYG representations of the applications so that the translators could see the full context of the phrases being translated and completely re-engineered the translation and product build process. So, in the end I had developed and continuously enhanced a comprehensive software system used to aid in the development, translation, and creation of National Language Versions of software applications and their documentation running natively on OS/2 and Windows platforms. • Became a highly regarded leader in the internationalization community within IBM and the industry• Helped achieve concurrent world-wide general availability in 40 national language versions• Presented internationalization and globalization concepts at industry conferences• IBM Peer Award for recognition from my team members• 7 IBM Ideas Awards for operations innovations and process improvements• Utilized C/C++, Pascal, RPG, JCL, SQL, DB2, TM/2, AS/400, OS/2, Windows APIs
