With over a decade in the field of luxury jewelry and creative design, Aja Raden is currently in her seventh year as a senior designer for Los Angeles based firm Tacori. There she is charged with designing the fine jewelry line. She was responsible for the first run of original designs for Tacori’s first ever (and famously successful) QVC line. She also was at one point charged with redesigning the bridal line, and is a continued source of designs for engagement rings and wedding bands. For the last four+ years she has helped the design team redefine the scope of Tacori’s market with the introduction of a fashion jewelry line. Her experiences in the field of auctions, antiquities and estate jewelry took place at the House of Kahn in Chicago. There, her responsibilities were exceptionally broad; appraisals, authentications, documentation and pricing of pieces, the creation of large scale, elaborate auctions, as well as the grading and identification of gems and precious metals. These duties were all facilitated by her extensive knowledge of various eras, styles, and design techniques appropriate to their time period. The time spent in Chicago led to a liaison with renowned Beverly Hills estate jewelers, Kazanjian Brothers. After a private meeting with Michael Kazanjian, they requested a signature piece for their popular Jewels for Charities project. Raden’s next opportunity was working exclusively with important stones under the tutelage of the internationally influential Leonard Himelsein. Raden familiarized herself with the world of global diamond trade, while assisting Mr. Himelsein in grading and appraising his vast jewelry inventory. Various private commissions for celebrities and other exclusive clients resulted in her own private lines.Specialties: Proficient in all areas of craft/production neccessary to truely, independantly design fine jewelry.Hand skills include but are not limited to:• Technical drawing, drafting, sketching, rendering & full detailed painting• Antiquity authentication and jewelry appraisal• Diamond grading and gem identification• Gold, silver & platinum smithing• Stone-setting• Finishing, polishing and repair• Wax-carving• Full technical understanding of casting, mold-making, and large scale production

AuthorStoned: Jewelry, Obsession, And How Desire Shapes The World Dec 2015 - PresentNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERWhat makes a stone a jewel? What makes a jewel priceless? And why do we covet beautiful things? Masterfully weaving together pop science, economics and history in this brilliant account of how 8 jewels shaped the course of history, artist and scientist Aja Raden tells an original and often startling story about our unshakeable addiction to beauty and the darker side of desire.Stoned breaks history into 3 categories—Want, Take, and Have—and explains what the diamond on your finger has to do with the GI Bill, why the glass beads that bought Manhattan were once deemed a fair trade, and how the French Revolution may have started over a necklace. As entertaining as it is incisive, Stoned is a raucous journey through the history of the human desire for what is rare, and therefore precious.CRITICAL PRAISE“[Stoned] romps through the stories of eight jewels.” —New York Times“A lively, incisive cultural and social history.” —Kirkus“Raden’s commentary on the often ugly side of human desire through the ages is consistently captivating, and her witty delivery makes the material shine.” — Publishers Weekly“Riveting, erudite.” —MORE Magazine“Raden brings impeccable credentials to the task at hand. She also writes with a blithe and breezy deftness, peppering her narrative with snarky but substantive footnotes that recall the insouciance of Mary Roach. A gem of a study into all that enchants and bewitches.”—Booklist“Aja Raden must be a kick at dinner parties … She’s also an appealingly informal, effortless storyteller."—Seattle Times“a populist history told with humor and great relish. . . . Profanely funny.”—David Duchovny“Money, power, sexual politics, and jewelry! Isn’t this what makes the world go ‘round? What more could I ask for in a book"—Madonna“’Stoned’ has its own special vitreous luster, just as any emerald worth its salt -an illumination into what makes us irrationally human.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

AuthorThe Truth About Lies; The Illusion Of Honesty And The Evolution Of Deceit Jun 2021 - Oct 2021Why do you believe what you believe? We’re always stunned when we realize we’ve been deceived. We always wonder why we believed the lie. But have you ever wondered why you believe the truth? People tell you the truth all the time, and you believe them; and if, at some later point, you’re confronted with evidence that the story you believed was indeed true, you never wonder why you believed it in the first place. In this incisive and insightful taxonomy of lies and liars, New York Times bestselling author Aja Raden makes the surprising claim that maybe you should.Buttressed by history, psychology, and science, The Truth About Lies is both an eye-opening primer on con-artistry―from pyramid schemes to shell games, forgery to hoaxes―and also a telescopic view of society through the mechanics of belief: why we lie, why we believe, and how, if at all, the acts differ. Through wild tales of cons and marks, Raden examines not only how lies actually work, but also why they work, from the evolutionary function of deception to what it reveals about our own.In her previous book, Stoned, Raden asked, “What makes a thing valuable?” In The Truth About Lies, she asks “What makes a thing real?” With cutting wit and a deft touch, Raden untangles the relationship of truth to lie, belief to faith, and deception to propaganda. The Truth About Lies will change everything you thought you knew about what you know, and whether you ever really know it.CRITICAL PRAISE"Aja Raden’s enviable gifts as a storyteller are surpassed only by the depth and breadth of her arcane knowledge. Fascinating and fun, The Truth About Lies could not be more topical. This is a smart, scintillating, tour de force of a book - and that’s no lie." ―Greg Olear, author of Dirty Rubles, Fathermucker, and Totally Killer"Read this book." ―Penn Jillette"Enjoyably witty . . . . Chock-full of quirky anecdotes, this is a fun romp through the tricky world of deception." ―Publishers Weekly
