At the age of 15 years I joined Meerut University (UP, India) and passed B.Sc. (Honours in Chemistry) 2 years later. In 1985, I completed my medical graduation training at the leading medical school in India, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Most of the teaching was in the classical format, but in pathology and microbiology, the ‘problem based learning’ (PBL) was used. In 1986, I was selected as a junior resident (SHO) in surgery at AIIMS after a highly competitive written test. The surgical residency at AIIMS is the most sought after in the whole India. From February 1994 to September 1996, at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool I returned to India in November 1996 and I joined as an assistant professor in Transplantation Surgery at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh (PGI). From July, 1997 - February 2000, I worked as an consultant-in-charge of surgical emergencies.
