A seasoned leader at the intersection of trust & safety and digital advertising, AJ Brown serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Brand Safety Institute. As COO, AJ orchestrates BSI's operations across its editorial, educational, and partnership endeavors, and aims to leverage his expertise to help marketers more effectively navigate brand safety & suitability on platforms. Prior to joining BSI, AJ was Head of Brand Safety and Ad Quality at Twitter, charged with delivering a positive advertising experience on the platform by serving high-quality ads in brand-safe environments. AJ joined Twitter in 2016, and led or played a key part in company milestones including the development and enforcement of civic integrity policies, enhancements in transparency, and most notably establishing Twitter’s Brand Safety practice. During his tenure, his teams wrote and enforced policies, built and scaled operations teams, launched product features, and cultivated partnerships with advertisers, agencies, and industry trade groups.Never one to sugarcoat difficult and nuanced topics, AJ is a vocal thought leader in the industry, and was among the founding platform representatives in multiple industry brand safety initiatives. AJ developed and executed a multi-pronged brand safety roadmap for Twitter following the company's acquisition by Elon Musk, including delivering enhanced brand safety controls and third-party reporting for advertisers, independent analysis of hate speech on the platform, and reigniting Twitter's transparency reporting. His work to promote responsible monetization at Twitter aligns perfectly with BSI’s mission to continuously drive a healthy and sustainable advertising ecosystem.In parallel with his day job at BSI, AJ is pursuing his MBA. A few notable accomplishments at Twitter 2.0 (before it was X):- Introduced Adjacency Controls, empowering advertisers to prevent ads from appearing alongside brand-unsuitable content in feed on Twitter before any other social platform- Launched industry-first third-party reporting partnerships with Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify that consistently showed 99.9%+ brand-safe ad placement on Twitter- Engaged Sprinklr to assess Twitter’s efforts to reduce the reach of hate speech, which concluded that toxic content receives 67% fewer impressions than nontoxic content, and that hate speech reach is significantly lower than our own first-party analyses showed- Overhauled political ad detection systems, reducing total ad review volume and associated costs by 85% while maintaining precision & recall from the previous system- Drove the publication of Twitter’s 21st Transparency Report, our first since the acquisition
