About Aj Gross
I am a recent graduate from Eckerd College, where I earned my B.S. in Biochemistry with high honors and a minor in Marine Science. I am currently a lab technician at the University of South Florida working under Dr. Mya Breitbart on a variety of projects, including marine virus discovery, removal of microplastics from wastewater, and the characterization of chemical contaminants in Tampa Bay, Florida.During my time at Eckerd, I was a student researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Greg Felton, where I researched organometallic catalysts for clean hydrogen generation and CO2 sequestration, and investigated light-initiated CO-releasing molecules (photoCORMs).During the summer of 2022, I interned in Dr. Ben Kleinstiver's Lab at the Center for Genomic Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where I helped design new CRISPR-Cas9 Base Editors that can target non-canonical regions in DNA.

Masters Student
Research Technician
Research Technician in the lab of Mya Breitbart, working on:Marine Viruses: detection and characterization of viruses in the marine ecosystem, including ones that infect the seagrass Thalassia testudinium (Turtle Grass).Microplastics: using electrocoagulation techniques to study microplastic removal efficiency of emerging processing methods on wastewater.Emerging Contaminants: characterizing and determining contaminants of concern in Tampa Bay, Florida, using GC/MS and LC/MS. Studying removal methods of various chemicals (PFAS, phthalates, pharmaceuticals, etc.), viruses, bacteria, and microplastics using electrocoagulation techniques.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
Synthesis and characterization of organometallic compounds. Instrumentation used includes FT-IR, NMR, UV-Vis, Cyclic Voltammetry, and photoCORM apparatus. My current work includes an analysis of previously synthesized compounds for their use as photoCORMS (molecules that release carbon monoxide in response to light) and an investigation into the kinetics and dosage of the interaction. My past work has included investigations into [FeFe]-hydrogenase active site bioinspired systems and identification of catalysts that can be utilized to undergo the reduction of CO2 to CO for carbon sequestration and recycling.
Analytical Chemistry Lab Teaching Assistant
Assisted professor with managing an Analytical Chemistry Lab. I taught students instrumentation skills, assisted with the use of instrumentation, enforced safety policies, and provided office hours for additional help.
Research Intern
Summer research intern in the laboratory of Dr. Ben Kleinstiver at the Center of Genomic Medicine. In the Kleinstiver lab, my work focused on designing new CRISPR-Cas9 base editors that can target non-canonical regions in DNA.
Natural Sciences Summer Research Program Fellow
Advanced workup of organometallic compounds synthesized during the previous school year, with a focus on advanced cyclic voltammetry techniques. I also co-led development of SOP's with my PI for analyzing photoCORMs in our lab.
