About Alison Head

Alison J. Head, Ph.D. is an information scientist and social science researcher. She is the founder and director of Project Information Literacy (PIL), an ongoing, research study research study that asks: What it is like to be a student in the digital age? In a series of 12 groundbreaking research studies, PIL has investigated how college students and recent graduates utilize research skills, competencies, and strategies for completing course work and for solving information problems in everyday life. Since 2009, Alison and her team of PIL researchers have interviewed and surveyed over 21,000 undergraduates at more than 93 U.S. four-year public and private universities and colleges and two-year community colleges. In a 2016 Inside Higher Education column, Barbara Fister called PIL "hands-down the most important long-term, multi-institutional research project ever launched on how students use information for school and beyond." Alison has a Ph.D. in library and information science from the University of California at Berkeley where she also received her BA. Currently, she is a Senior Researcher at the metaLAB at Harvard and was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Graduate School of Education 2019/2020. In 2017, she was awarded the inaugural S. T. Lee Lectureship in Library Leadership and Innovation from Harvard Libraries. From 2011 through 2015, Alison was a Fellow and Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.Alison's research about the information-seeking behavior of today's college students has been covered by the Huffington Post, NPR, Atlantic Magazine, USA Today, Business Insider, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Education Week, and American Libraries. Executive Director of Project Information Literacy (PIL), a public benefit nonprofit dedicated to conducting ongoing, large-scale research about today's college students and their research habits. She is also a Senior Researcher at the metaLAB (at) Harvard University. From fall 2011 through spring 2015 she was a Fellow, and then a Faculty Associate, at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society.The ongoing PIL research study seeks to understand how U.S. college students conduct course-related and everyday life research and find and use information in the digital age. PIL has conducted eight large scale research studied and interviewed or surveyed 21,000 college students in more than 93 US colleges and universities. In 2012, PIL launched "The PIL Passage Studies," a unique series of studies about the challenges college students and recent college graduates face as they transition from one complex information landscape to the next. PIL is the largest scholarly research study (by sample size) about information literacy in the U.S. that has ever been undertaken. This ongoing study has been supported with contributing funds from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Gale/Cengage Learning, ProQuest, and Cable in the Classroom.
