Research AssociateOdisha University Of Agriculture & Technology, Bhubaneswar Jul 2022 - Jul 2023Bhubaneswar, Odisha, IndiaI had the opportunity to work on a transformative project aimed at enhancing watershed planning and management in selected watersheds of Odisha. The key aspects of my involvement included:1. Comprehensive Hydrologic Monitoring: Implemented detailed hydrologic monitoring systems to support science-based watershed planning and management. This involved the collection and analysis of hydrological data to understand and manage water resources effectively.2. Development of Decision Support Systems (DSS): Contributed to the creation of DSS based on site-specific land resource information. These systems are designed to aid in the planning, implementation, and management of various watershed, agriculture, horticulture, and other departmental programs. The DSS operates at various spatial scales, including cadastral, land management units, micro watersheds, sub watersheds, and entire watersheds.3. Data Collection and Integration: Collected detailed, site-specific data at the cadastral level on land resources, including both physical and chemical properties. Integrated this land resource information with hydrological data to develop robust DSS for watershed planning and management.4. Utilizing Advanced Technologies: Leveraged high-resolution remote sensing, IoT sensors, and AI/ML for modeling. These advanced technologies enabled us to adapt and refine existing hydrologic models or develop new ones suitable for micro and sub watershed scales. This approach addressed the limitations of current models that are typically suitable only at the sub basin or catchment level. And the REWARD initiative, aimed to create a sustainable impact by implementing key interventions such as soil and water conservation, water harvesting, groundwater recharging, crop selection, and nutrient management. By integrating advanced data collection and modeling techniques, we provided a strong foundation for informed decision-making and effective watershed management.
