As an Adjunct Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, I had the privilege of instructing nearly 100 students in both Industrial and Graphic Design. My curriculum covered an expansive range of topics, including assistive technology, the integration and future implications of AI tools in design, product life cycles, business strategy, and systems thinking. These subjects were chosen to foster a comprehensive understanding among students about the broader context of their design work, emphasizing the importance of creating with consideration for the people and the planet we design for. At RIT's Studio 930 Design Program, I was part of a dynamic team specializing in assistive design for individuals with disabilities. Collaborating closely with the MS Society and Al Sigl, we embarked on a variety of access-related projects aimed at enhancing quality of life. Our innovations include a modular crutch system and a body cooling system tailored for MS patients, a postural feedback device for stroke recovery, a tub lift designed for the elderly, as well as accessible buttons and styluses specifically for children in wheelchairs. Each project was driven by a deep commitment to improving the daily experiences of those in need, demonstrating the profound impact of thoughtful, inclusive design.
