I joined Karwan-e-Hayat in the capacity of its Director and General Secretaryin 1998. Karwan-e-Hayat is a voluntary, non government, not for profit, welfare organization, active in caring for mentally disturbed patients, since its establishment in 1983. It started its welfare activity with an Out-patient Clinic for Psychiatric patients in a low-income community neighbourhood of Karachi. Later in 2004, when Karwan-e-Hayat established a purpose – built institution for mentally ill patients, including in-patient facility alongwith out- patient department and a fully equipped Day Care Unit, Karwan-e-Hayat Board of Directors desired me to take responsibility of running this new project of 100 bed Medical Centre named KPT/Karwan-e-Hayat , Psychiatric Care and Rehabilitation Centre (PCRC) at Keamari , Karachi.I readily accepted this responsibility and played an important role in layout designing, planning and establishing all related activities, staff requirements, their hiring and training to start the new facility.Since the commissioning of the PCRC project in late 2004, I has been serving and managing this 100- bed psychiatric care facility as its Medical Superintendent and Consultant Psychiatrist and has been instrumental in the Karwan-e-Hayat Institution earning high level of repute and recognition in the field of Psychiatric Care and Rehabilitation all over Pakistan.During the last seven years, I has arranged several National and International Conferences, Awareness Seminars and Family Physician Training Programmes. I also delivers lectures to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Nurses of Aga Khan Nursing School on Psychiatric Rehabilitation. I has presented more than twenty papers on Karwan-e-Hayat’s PCRC project at different National and International Conferences. He has also participated in more than fifty Mental Health awareness programmes for the electronic and print media of Pakistan.
