About Ajmal Roshan

It all started with being curious about different living species around us. These organisms are so elegant that I’m very enthusiastic in understanding the different life forms as well as the mechanisms that make them possible. I investigate on designing robots for locomotion by emulating the concept of Central Pattern Generators – CPGs, the neurons that are part of rhythmic activities in living organisms. As part of my education and work, I have spent my time in multiple cities across the globe which helped me to develop a positive and open mind set. This has made me independent, flexible, adaptive, a resourceful problem-solver, a collaborative team-player as well as an effective communicator by working in diverse cultures and backgrounds.Associate Member of Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It is with the intention of inspiring the future generation to the world of science and technology that I volunteered as a STEM Ambassador in the U.K. This has improved my presentation skills, public speaking as well as collaborating and working in groups, by visiting schools to undertake STEM related classes as well as being part of various science festivals.Twitter: https://twitter.com/roshanedasseryE-mail: roshanedasserry@yahoo.com

The research is on designing exosuits (soft exoskeletons) that will provide assistance for human locomotion. This is done by investigating on a novel control approach by emulating the concept of Central Pattern Generators - CPGs. Using the bioinspired concept of CPGs could help in designing exosuits for multiple locomotion modes.Soft Robotics and Assistive Robotics

The research was on the design and control of solar powered flying robots / Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In this role, I created SolidWorks model of the Solar Quadrotor. Following that, the model was exported into MATLAB Simscape Multibody. It was modified so as to make it fit for the purpose. The model could show the affects of thrust force and moments due to roll, pitch and yaw on the quadrotor. Using System Identification Toolbox, obtained the transfer function of the parametres. To account for effects of resonance, the Frequency Analysis of the Solar Quadrotor model was performed. Compared the experimental and datasheet characteristics of motors and propellers using RCBenchamrk 1585 Test Stand. As for control, the concept of cascade control of altitude, roll and pitch was implemented. I also presented a Solidworks model depicting the working mechanism of the frame for solar cells to be kept on the solar quadrotorAssisted undergraduate students with their senior design projects. In order to validate the control of the quadrotor before flying in the outdoor space, I designed and manufactured a test bench for the quadrotor to test the altitude, roll, pitch and yaw motion.Another project I worked on was on Two Mass system connected with a flexible joint. Here, I developed the SolidWorks model. Following that, I exported the CAD model into MATLAB Simscape Multibody, where simulation was run. To account for resonance effects, the Frequency Analysis on the model was performed.

(Interim / Intern – aircraft structures engineering department). My responsibilities include reviewing the damages on aircrafts' structures and engines. I updated the dent and buckle charts into AMOS database after every base check, which was then uploaded to the aircrafts’ system. I ensured that all damages/ cracks are within allowable limits and escalated the issue if out of limits damages were found. One of the interesting projects I undertook was assisting in interpreting and reviewing the engineering drawings and designs associated with the installation of split scimitar winglets onto the aircrafts. This work accounted for 1.5% in reduced fuel consumption and reduction of ~12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. I communicated and collaborated the vital information within company’s other departments, aircraft manufacturers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). I kept a track record of the RTS (Request to Service) on Boeing 737 MAX aircrafts while they were grounded. I co-ordinated and made the report available to structures, powerplant, avionics, airframes, cabins, reliability engineers. This work helped to get the aircrafts back into service in a timely manner after the approval by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).• Familiarized with ATA (Air Transport Association) chapterization and numbering system.• Collaborated closely with airframes, structures and powerplant engineering teams.• Experienced in working with aviation Maintenance Repair, Overhaul (MRO) software - AMOS.• Assisted in reviewing and implementing technical regulations / policies issued by international authorities (FAA, EASA), government guidelines, OEMs - Airworthiness Directives, Service Bulletins and Service Letters. • Supported in providing solutions on corrosion issues by actively participating in problem-solving meetings.• Investigated and analyzed the trends on aircraft engine’s blocker door hole issues.

My responsibilities include to develop design concepts and evolve them into products. By using engineering fundamentals, I performed manual design calculations to substantiate the concepts developed and liaised with the team to ensure compliance with approved processes, safety and international standards. In this role, I utilized SolidWorks 3D CAD modelling software, materials library, ABAQUS and ANSYS simulation software and developed models, drawings, part lists, bill of materials. I researched into feasibility, operations, testing, manufacturing processes, performance of mechanisms, components and systems. • Developed and tested new designs requiring ~40% fewer support structure materials while maintaining strength and safety. Successfully proposed design for implementation.• Communicated and collaborated across multi-disciplinary teams to produce and implement self-sustaining solutions. • Achieved optimized designs as per specifications within stipulated project schedules and budgets.• Delivered presentations to internal stakeholders and reviewed the design concepts developed.• Utilized CATIA V5 3D CAD modelling software to design products in accordance with the concepts of fatigue and failure, DFM (Design for Manufacturing), GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) as well as using Failure Assessment [R6] Diagram.

    Glasgow, United Kingdom
The University of Strathclyde's High Value Manufacturing Catapult, Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) – Glasgow, funded by UK government, is a recognized center of excellence across the world for R&D and innovative manufacturing technologies. One of my main responsibilities was digitizing the forging operations and analyzing the differences between the simulated models and the forged parts from experimental trials. I proactively participated in forging trials with the project teams and recorded the data. The recorded data was then processed and analyzed using MATLAB, I identified the correlations among influencing parameters. A report was then submitted on the investigation. One of my achievements was that, I redesigned, developed and implemented an alternative and cost-effective method to plot the complex geometric contours of the forged parts, which was usually relied on CMMs and scanning.• Digitized the experimental forging operations in SolidWorks, maintained designs and files.• Modeled, simulated, validated the simulations and forging process in QForm (FEA software). • Analyzed the microstructure and grain flow-lines of the forged parts using optical microscope. Recorded and discussed the findings.• Modeled the forging operations on SolidWorks and QForm software for verification, validation and analysis.
