About António J. Arsénio Dos Santos Costa

In 1993 with 22 years old, concluded a pre-Bologna five-year degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with the main specialization in Telecommunications and Electronics at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL). In 1998, concluded a pre-Bolonha M.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications at the University of Aveiro (UA). From 1994 to 1997 contributed to a European project concerning the integration of a space segment with constellations of non-geostationary satellites into the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), developing his first M.Sc Dissertation in this area. From 1997 to 2001, worked as a radiocommunication regulation and coordination engineer at the Portuguese telecommunications regulator. From 2001 to 2014, worked as a microwave point-to-point and cellular network planning and deployment management engineer at a fixed and mobile telecommunications operator in Portugal.After perceiving the strength of tidal streams in Aveiro's inlet, he conceived and applied for patents of hydroreaction devices to promote the extraction of hydropower from tidal and run-of-river currents with the creation of a net-head by difference in pressure in addition to the currents' kinetic head. Scale models of those devices, were tested in the bay of Peniche’s naval port in 2002 and 2003. The concept obtained the granting of two European patents, one patent in the United States of America (USA) and one patent in Brasil, and was recognized with gold medals in the international invention exhibitions of Nuremberg 2004 and Geneva 2005.As a result of his interest in electrical power systems, later on, in 2014, obtained from IST in the UL, his second M.Sc. degree, then with the main specialization in Electrical Power Engineering. His second M.Sc. dissertation was on the study of electrical generation solutions for ultra low-head turbines in hydropower from water streams.* He proceeded with his studies and in January 2022, concluded a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at IST in the UL. His Ph.D. and post-doctoral research have been on levitation and electrical machines using High-Temperature Superconductors (HTS).
