About Arthur Bonsall

I am a hardworking young professional with a passion for aquatic research, with a particular interest in the ecology and management of freshwater fish. I am currently in a contract position as an Assessment Biologist with the Lake Erie Management Unit of the MNDMNRF.The following list highlights some of the most relevant skills and experience gained through my post-secondary education and early career: • Knowledge of many techniques related to fisheries and aquatic science. This includes, but is not limited to: aquatic species identification, aging of hard structures, collection of life-history data, and proficiency with acoustic telemetry technology.• The ability to conduct basic and complex statistical analyses, including those commonly used in the field of fisheries management. This skill involves competency with Microsoft Office 365 and the statistical program 'R'. • Experience with data input and validation. This includes inputting research related data, performing data correction, and designing efficient databases for new projects.• Strong oral communication skills. I can effectively covey scientific research in a non-technical manner, but also comfortably discuss complex concepts with other specialists.• Strong scientific writing skills. I have used these skills to prepare a program review for the Lake Erie Management Unit, as well as contribute to scientific journal articles.

    In the role of Assessment Biologist, I was responsible for conducting assessment programs and research as part of the Erie Management Unit. This included the following:• I conducted a program review for the Lake Erie Management Unit [LEMU] Limnology Program. This involved the analyzing 22 years of data to determine if the program was effectively meeting internal goals as well as commitments to other initiatives. The results of this review were used to make recommendations to improve the efficiency of the program design, and were implemented in the following field season. • I designed and budgeted a multi-year research program focusing on the assessment of Smallmouth Bass spawning in Lake Erie and oversaw the 2021 field season. The overall goal of this program is to assess current management strategies given recent science and regulation changes in neighboring systems.• I oversaw multiple assessment programs including a Broad-scale Monitoring Program [BsM] in Lake Erie. The BsM program involved cooperation with colleagues at the Upper Great Lakes Management Unit.• I updated the project methodology for core assessment programs based on a review completed by a previous Assessment Biologist. This also involved altering the statistical analyses to meet the new program goals as well as recoding all analyses from ‘SAS’ code into ‘R’ code.

    As the Lake Erie Aquatic Ecologist Intern, I was primarily responsible for the creation of a database to store research data collected by the Lake Erie Management Unit. This involved entering, proofing, and reformatting data collected as part of the limnology program into an Access database format. I also standardized and compiled limnology data collected from other contemporary and historical research programs.I also had the opportunity to gain the following experience while in this position:• I analyzed survey data collected through a core research program (Long Point Bay Index Trawl) using standard fisheries methodology. This also involved modernization of the project methodology, including re-coding the statistical analyses from ‘SAS’ code into ‘R’ code.• I wrote a section of the Lake Erie Management Unit 2019 Annual Report outlining the work required to complete the limnology database. In addition, I also updated the Long Point Bay Index Trawl section using the results of the aforementioned analysis.• I regularly participated in meetings with other biologists in the Lake Erie Management Unit. I was also able to liaise with collaborators outside of the organization.
