I traveled and worked directly with SCI’s owner at winning large contracts. This guy was awesome, very charismatic, and during bid development took the time to mentor me on sales strategy. Small companies = multiple hats. In addition to developing winning proposals, I also engineered plans, SOW, and performed project management. Engaging in the cradle-to-grave life cycle was not new to me, there are advantages to it. One memorable project was the Wofford college brand new basketball stadium; sports arenas wiring put data centers to shame. It was the first time I witnessed the erection of a Daktronics scoreboard; it was a great experience learning about those systems and a pleasure to work with Daktronics PM. It was a thrill to suspend large structures such as the scoreboard and massive speaker arrays from the arena’s catwalk. As a project manager, I orchestrate incredibly large-scale LCD & LED walls, all driven by operator-friendly content management software. Many of these walls required unusual custom-built structures installed suspended or freestanding even in seismic active locations; partnering with the structural engineers comes in handy. I felt so proud when my PMO approached me to agile manage the R&D team’s virtual classroom SaaS software development and rollout. He said, “You’re the top PM for this”. This PMO is truly the best!’ The sweet part of this role is that it was for the Harvard University School of Business! As a servant leader, I took the initiative to plan and host summit meetings during the 12-month roadmap. The summit approach kept the large group of brilliant theorists and software engineers aligned, thus efficiently supporting the prioritization, and tracking of the product owner backlog. During my tenure, our PMO division raised the key performance indicator (KPI) net promoter score (NPS) from 33 to 80 points within the 24 months of its onset; ranking the US headquarters top global achievers. Yes, we were world CHAMPIONS! Supporting this achievement, I wrote a series of technical workbooks, templates, and customer-facing presentations that were adopted as global corporate standards. Today…those standards streamline the project lifecycle rendering a high success rate and a positive customer journey. Most of these structures were in dire straits requiring demolition to the skeleton, structural integrity certification, completely new infrastructure, and additions. This is where my AutoCAD architectural space planning skills again came into play. I drafted needed plans including MEP used for City of Atlanta building permits, and personally pulled building permits. The city always accepted my plans, architect seal was not needed. I hired and project managed subcontractors & construction crews and was present during the life cycle to ensure the scope was met and work was up to code. It is bizarre to say that I love this muddy, dusty, rough environment, but it drives me to witness the completion of shiny, beautiful, safe products that families will enjoy.
