+ Conducted interviews and ethnographic studies, field measurements, photographic surveys, and secondary research to map the social and physical terrain of Shangshuigou, a shrinking and aging village on Beijing’s rural-urban fringe. ...+ Produced lo-fi design proposals for a new village gathering place and compiled a booklet of interviews, essays, photos, and collages.

+ Wrote comprehensive "how-to" guide assisting rural communities in starting non-profit development organizations following the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street approach. ...+ Organized architecture tours, wrote articles and press releases, and photographed historic sites to raise public awareness of historic preservation and community revitalization in Minnesota.

+ Designed original, fun, and engaging methods and materials for teaching English to children, working adults, and elderly in rural Japan. + Served as cultural ambassador and was active in a wide variety of club, volunteer, and grassroots initiatives to support music, dance, art, sports, the environment, architectural heritage, and community-building in the Nishi-Awa region

+ Translated four diaries written by Japanese farmers and housewives during World War Two; compiled an exhaustive index of references to wartime diet and rural food culture in rural Japan for an ongoing food history study. ...+ Documented contemporary rural lifestyles across Shikoku and Kyushu and interviewed rural elders about their daily experiences during World War Two.
