Akemi is an architect and urban planner focused on sustainable development and disaster recovery strategies. Her projects include urban revitalization strategies, mobility corridors, public spaces, community facilities, and land use. She has also coordinated participatory planning processes in New York, New Milford, Puerto Rico, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico City, San Salvador, Mocoa, Lima, Valparaiso, and Amman. Her work has been awarded the ARCHITECT Magazine Studio Prize in the US, the Priscilla King Gray Fund of MIT Ideas Competition, the Guangzhou Urban Innovation Award in China, the Bronze Holcim Awards Latin America, and Mexico City’s Instituto Electoral (IECM) Innovation Award 2017. In addition to her urban design and planning practice called Sustrato, Akemi has also co-founded and led several digital initiatives, including an SMS-based mental health service for natural disaster survivors in Perú and Puerto Rico, a platform for post-earthquake aid coordination in Mexico, and MapatonCDMX, a gaming app for mapping Mexico City’s informal transit.
