Represented engineering to other departments and participated in company-wide cross-functional planning, strategy, and tactical discussions. Interacted extensively with Research, Customer Service and Operations, Product Management, BD, Finance and Legal on a wide variety of projects. Led team through a tough year after 2 rounds of layoffs, maintained morale and productivity. Continued to contribute as a software architect and developer.

Grew the team to 12 engineers. Instituted a development and release process that resulted in continuous weekly releases over the course of 3+ years with minimal defects and almost no planning churn. Participated in the design and development of every significant engineering project. Continued to provide live site and operations support.

First software engineer in a ground-breaking personal genomics startup. Part of a four-person team that designed and developed core genomics data storage and the internal alpha prototype of the service. Developed authentication and genome sharing systems for the initial launch of the 23andme website. Solely responsible for the initial definition, design and development of internal applications to support fulfillment operations, customer service, and reporting. Served as the release engineer, release manager, and provided live support. Performed numerous development, architecture, system and database administration, security officer, product manager and other tasks essential in a startup.

Provided technical leadership as one of the 3 architects in the Merchant Technology engineering team that served PayPal’s fastest growing business unit at the time. Worked extensively with product management on design and definition of future merchant integration solutions. Led a performance improvement project for some of the most visible PayPal Merchant APIs. Responsible for API performance monitoring and live support and diagnostics escalations.

Team architect for Consumer Protections, Mobile Payments, and Global Merchant Features engineering teams, with a temporary assignment to a scalability and performance improvement project. Worked with business units and product management on new feature definition and scope estimation. Interfaced with system and enterprise architecture groups. Led technical design and performed code reviews. Mentored and trained other engineers. Worked on a number of architecture projects of all sizes. Provided live site support and excelled at troubleshooting and bug fixing. Technical lead on the first ever PayPal Mobile project throughout its full product cycle starting with extensive work on product definition, followed by technical design, implementation, QA and launch.

Developed features for several different product teams in PayPal’s extremely fast-paced release cycle. Contributed improvements to the application infrastructure. Was recruited to work on a highly visible scalability and performance improvement project.

Developed new customer service application features while learning PayPal’s applications, infrastructure and engineering processes.
