A New York-qualified attorney fascinated by how global politics, economics, and tech developments shape clients' legal needs. I have three years of legal experience and six years of leadership experience. I'm also an award-nominated author about Islamic finance in the global economy. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor's degree in political science and history in 2011, I spent a year in Singapore. I completed a diploma in Islamic Finance in Singapore with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Through my experience learning about Islamic Finance in emerging markets and being guided by a Singaporean Civil Servant about the economic policies of Singapore, I became increasingly interested in how western economies and their legal systems would accommodate legal norms in an eastern shifting global economy. To explore these opportunities, I enrolled to study law at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, to specialize in the law of Islamic Financial regulation and complete a degree in English Common Law. At SOAS, I was able to study Islamic Law, Laws of Asia and Africa, and write my dissertation on the 'Interlegality of Islamic Bond (Sukuk) Regulation in Malaysia.' In my spare time, I was a starter on the SOAS Men's 1st Football team, and I founded the Islamic Finance and Ethics society to invite lecturers from around the UK to speak about the topic. As a result of my interest in Islamic Finance, I was offered a publishing contract by Garnet Publishing in my second year of law school to write the first popular non-fiction book on Islamic Finance. After completing my degree in London, I moved back to Canada to further my studies at Osgoode Hall Law School to complete an LLM in Capital Markets. I wrote a paper on 'The Effect of Bitcoin Regulation on Canadian Financial Institutions' supervised by Dr. Benjamin Geva. I graduated with an A- average over 12 courses while writing my manuscript. The opportunity to enter private practice presented itself in Toronto; however, I decided to complete the manuscript instead. The book was published in April 2021, nominated for The British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding (2021), and reviewed in Asian Affairs, the academic journal of the Royal Society of Asian Affairs. I firmly believe in the transformative power of learning. And that for every problem, there is a solution. We simply need to continue our search to find an answer. This process is my reward.
