Copy Editor
As one of the copy editors for the University of Washington student newspaper, I read and edited every story for AP Style, grammar, consistency, and factual accuracy. In doing so, I helped protect the credibility of and improved quality in the newspaper by demonstrating strong writing and reading comprehension skills.
Research Assistant, Linguistics Department
I worked with professors in the UC San Diego linguistics department to transcribe and annotate weekly language lessons in ELAN for upload to the shared corpus. During these language lessons, I translated bidirectionally between Spanish and English to facilitate the elicitation sessions. I also collaborated with the professors (Dr. Michelle Yuan and Dr. Gabriela Caballero) and some graduate students in the department to create, manage, and maintain a dictionary database for native speakers of and others seeking to learn San Juan Piñas Mixtec, an under-documented, under-studied language indigenous to Oaxaca, Mexico.
Handshake Industry Engagement And Employer Assistant
On a daily basis, I corresponded with employers, industry professionals, and Career Center Associate Directors to post events, info sessions, job/internship opportunities to Handshake and to manage career fair registrations and invoices. I vetted and reviewed requests from employers and students for access to UC San Diego's Handshake portal. Using data from the portal, I designed informative reports to visualize advising appointment schedules and employer career fair registrations. For both employers and Associate Directors, I created the new marketing request form, now the Career Center’s standard. Using the responses to the form, I identified cohorts from a base of 200,000+ alumni and current students to promote relevant employer events to them via email blasts. By the end of my position, I had crafted and edited several comprehensive standard operating procedure documents for use throughout the department. In my last few weeks, I also scheduled interviews for potential new hires and trained my new co-workers for the role upon their hire.
Instructional Assistant, Linguistics Department
Beyond watching the class lectures in preparation for the weekly synchronous sections, I met with the professor (Dr. Will Styler) and the rest of the instructional assistant team, comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students, to plan the logistics of the weekly interactive section with the students, during which students collaborate hands-on on language data. Each week, I hosted one office hour, during which students attended to seek help about anything related to the course materials or the field of linguistics at large. My administrative duties included making homework revisions as needed and assisting with grading and giving feedback on student assignments and assessments.
Serials Receiving Student Specialist, Suzzallo & Allen Libraries
In my position as a Serials Receiving Student Specialist in the Acquisitions & Rapid Cataloging Services division at Suzzallo Library, I processed and sorted international and domestic serial newspapers in several languages both alphabetically and chronologically in order to contribute to the preservation of the publications within our library. I sorted standing orders from global publishers and vendors for books and textbooks slated to be shelved in the stacks, ensuring that the invoices for both serial and monographic orders match records in the database and have been completed and filed appropriately.
