Environmental Scientist

Current

Richmond, Ca

Developing hydrodynamic and biogeochemical models for San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.

Oct 2018 - Present

Research Associate

Department Of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Cornell University

Fremont, Ca

Co-authored and won Academic Venture Fund grant from Cornell University's Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future to investigate hydrodynamic mechanisms behind internal loading of Phosphorus and impact on harmful algal blooms in Honeoye Lake. Developing a two-dimensional hydrodynamic/water quality model of Honeoye Lake based on CE-QUAL-W2 framework, in collaboration with Upstate Freshwater Institute, to elucidate hydrodynamic and chemical processes behind internal Phosphorus loading. Applying CE-QUAL-W2 model to test engineering solutions to the internal Phosphorus loading problem, including oxidation of the hypolimnion, addition of Alum, construction of a wind break, and pumping out the hypolimnion. Investigating impact of climate change on internal Phosphorus loading in lakes of various geometries.

Postdoctoral Associate

Ithaca, Ny

Provided consulting services to Cornell University in New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) permit renewal process for Cornell's Lake Source Cooling facility. Developed 3D hydrodynamic model for Cayuga Lake to measure effect of active point source discharge on water residence time within the lake's southern shelf. Developed a submodel for entrainment of active point source within existing 3D hydrodynamic solver and designed field studies to calibrate and validate. Demonstrated viability of extended deep-water outfall to NYDEC using CORMIX model. Mentored undergraduate and graduate students in projects on flow through vegetation and measurement of sediment dynamics in Cayuga Inlet. Served as scientific program coordinator for Cornell's CURIE Academy, a week-long summer program for high school women interested in science and engineering.

2011 - 2017 ~6 yrs

Graduate Research Assistant

Ithaca, Ny

Worked on problems related to environmental fluid mechanics including turbulence modeling, flow through aquatic vegetation, and residence time. Developed a new turbulence model for flow through aquatic vegetation that correctly budgets turbulent kinetic energy to transition smoothly from emergent to submerged vegetation cases. This new model drastically improves predictions of turbulent kinetic energy and modestly improves predictions of velocity profiles and Reynolds stress compared to other models of the same class. Designed laboratory studies for calibration and validation of vegetation turbulence model. Designed and conducted field studies using acoustic velocimetry, thermistors, and fluorescent dye tracing to quantify residence time in a coastal embayment. Acquired general skills in time series analysis and uncertainty analysis.

2002 - 2011 ~9 yrs

Course Instructor

Transport, Mixing, and Transformation in the Environment (CEE 6550), Fall 2008 and 2009. Responsible for all aspects of this introductory graduate-level course focused on physical processes and quantification of advection, diffusion, and dispersion in the aquatic environment. Developed lecture notes that are publicly available and used by at least five instructors at three universities. Quality of course rated 4.56/5.00 in 2009 student evaluations (college-wide average was 3.79).

2008 - 2009 ~1 yr

Graduate Teaching Specialist

College Of Engineering, Cornell University

Developed and led workshops for first-time graduate teaching assistants. Workshops included "Creating a Classroom Presence", "Modes of Learning", and "Diversity in the Classroom". Collaborated with other teaching specialists to develop "Active Learning" and "Assessment" workshops. Led numerous "Microteaching" sessions: videotaped teaching assistants delivering short lessons and facilitated peer feedback in small groups.

2005 - 2009 ~4 yrs

Teaching Assistant

Fluid Mechanics (CEE 3310), Fall 2005, 2006. Taught sections with 20+ students, held office hours frequently attended by 15+ students, and graded exams for this 80+ student course. Overall quality of teaching rated 4.77/5.00 in 2006 student evaluations.Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics (CEE 6370/MAE 6272), Spring 2006. Set up and supervised laboratory expermients using ADV, LDV, PIV, and LIF techniques; held office hours to help students with assignments focused on data analysis; provided support for student projects.
