Angelos Kolias is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Neurosurgeon in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. He also holds an adjunct Professorship at Humanitas University, Milan, Italy. He completed his neurosurgical residency in Cambridge and received subspecialty fellowship training in anterior skull base/pituitary neurosurgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.His clinical interests include surgery for brain tumours (special interest in skull base/pituitary surgery), neuroendoscopy, spine surgery, neurotrauma, and general neurosurgery. His research utilises a variety of study designs, including observational studies, dry laboratory experiments (bioengineering), and qualitative but the main emphasis is on the conduct of randomised trials. For his methodological work, he is collaborating with the IDEAL group (University of Oxford), COMET group (University of Liverpool), and the MRC Biostatistics Unit (University of Cambridge). In the field of skull base/pituitary, he is working on i) the development of a core outcome set for pituitary surgery and ii) the implementation and evaluation of PET-guided surgery for pituitary adenomas. These are collaborative projects with Mr Richard Mannion (Clinical Lead for Neurosurgery), Mr Tom Santarius (Lead for complex Neurosurgical Oncology), Prof Mark Gurnell (Lead for Endocrinology), and clinicians outside Cambridge. In the field of neurotrauma, together with Prof Peter Hutchinson (Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Cambridge) and several UK and international collaborators, he has published impactful papers in journals such as the NEJM and Lancet. He is the Co-Chief Investigator of four NIHR-funded neurotrauma randomised trials and the Associate Director of the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Neurotrauma. His ongoing collaboration with Prof Michael Sutcliffe (Professor of Biomedical Engineering) aims to develop our understanding of the mechanisms of tissue damage following acute brain injury.During the COVID-19 pandemic, he is leading the neurosurgical theme of the CovidSurg portfolio of studies, which have resulted in several practice-changing outputs.He is also committed to advancing Global Neurosurgery. Under his leadership as the chair of the WFNS Young Neurosurgeons committee from 2019-2021, the committee made significant progress in defining and beginning to address the needs of Young Neurosurgeons globally.
