While I joined as a business analyst (product manager), I was always deeply interested in writing code. On my first project, I ended up single-handedly building a nifty utility that would migrate all our client's document templates into a new format as part of the upgrade! I had shed my cowboy coding ways and was experiencing the joy of TDD and extreme programming for the first timeThrough the next 10 years of playing the product manager role on various engagements, I stayed connected to code while also building deeper knowledge of the domains. Engagement after successful engagement, I witnessed firsthand, the power of good engineering, delivery and product practices and how it almost guaranteed great outcomes.As technology becomes core to their competitive advantage, many businesses are now trying to develop software independently. Understandably, this is not a well-established capability for these businesses, so they struggle in hiring & nurturing good talent as well as putting in place the right tools and processes to get value out of the investment they are making.
