About Kyriakos Varypatakis, Phd
I am an experienced molecular plant scientist with strong background in plant nematology, genomics and next-generation sequencing analyses.I completed my Ph.D. research in plant nematology and genomics at The James Hutton Institute (Dundee, Scotland) and the University of St Andrews working with Prof. John Jones and Dr. Vivian Blok. Previously, I had obtained a M.Sc. in plant pathology and entomology with a minor in plant physiology and greenhouse horticulture (MSc Plant Sciences) from Wageningen University (the Netherlands), and a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the faculty of Plant Sciences (specialty of Plant Protection and Environment) from the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece).Since October 2022, I am working as Research Scientist on the Potato Genetics & Molecular Physiology group at The James Hutton Institute.
Listed skills include Plant Pathology, Agriculture, Microscopy, Biological Control, and 20 others.

Research Scientist
My main tasks include:•Phenotyping for tolerance to different abiotic (e.g. flood) and biotic (e.g. potato cyst nematodes) stresses in potato.•Gene editing in potato and establishment of workflow for bioinformatics analysis.•Genomic data analyses (e.g. RNA-seq) and support.
Scientific Officer
I was involved in developing assays, library preparation for next-generation sequencing and genotyping.
Ph.D. Student
I focused on the application of genomic tools to identify avirulence (avr) genes in the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida. I used targetted sequencing to capture effector-encoding genomic regions on host-adapted populations, as well as whole-genome re-sequencing using Illumina technologies. Analyses of the next-generation sequencing data and the study of allele frequencies provided a number of candidate avr genes and important information on selection evolution and adaptation of G. pallida populations.
Research Assistant
Barcoding of potato cyst nematode samples from East Africa for next-generation sequencing.
M.Sc. Internship
I worked in the group of Dr. Martin de Vos, on identifying resistances on various vegetables to the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.
M.Sc. Thesis
I joined the group of the Assist. Prof. Geert Smant and Dr. Jose Lozano, where I studied the role of the protease Rcr3-regulated genes in JA- or EGF-dependent signalling pathway activated upon the infection of Arabidopsis plants by the cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii.
M.Sc. Thesis
I examined the effect of the use of olive mill wastes and rhizosphaeric microorganisms (isolated from the specific organic compost) as a biological control application. The project was supervised by Prof. Epaminondas Paplomatas and Dr. Sotirios Tjamos.
B.Sc. Internship
My main task was to assist in plant diseases diagnosis.
B.Sc. Internship
I worked in the Laboratory of Mycology (Department of Plant Pathology), studying the effects of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum on onion crops, and other plant diseases caused by a range of fungi species.
