Alphonso Smart grew up in Los Angeles, California. Once he was old enough, dreams of seeing the world were fulfilled when he joined the US Navy at age 19. All of the experiences achieved in that first deployment, were captured not by his own hand, but in the hand of tourist trinkets and post cards. Determined to do better next time, and to really experience the world, Alphonso took up photography as a part time hobby and begin to shoot snapshots throughout the rest of his career.Having seen and experienced a good portion of the world, Alphonso decided to hone his skills by attending the Art Institute of Jacksonville and obtaining his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Photography. At AI, Alphonso’s large world view had a direct correlation on the size of his image subjects, packing large stories into small dioramas and commercial work.Bored Squid Photography was born of this unique skill set. With admiration and homage to artists such as David Levinthal and Aaron Siskind, Alphonso began photographing substantial stories on compact items. He also found that sometimes, even just a crack in a wall or chipped paint can tell a story. The vision of Bored Squid Photography is to expand the idea of what fine art and the viewers’ aesthetic experience can be. He wishes to find beauty and substance in the mundane and miniscule.

Account RepresentativeDominion Enterprises Jul 2017 - Sep 2022Left job because they refused to pay me my worth. They were bringing in new hires and paying them salary while I was stuck on full commission. I was making less than $200 a week busting my butt for this company. Only after I put in my two week notice did they make an offer, not comparable to the wage they were paying, but to match the one I was leaving for, which was still lower. -

Photographer And SalesTeddy Bear Portraits Feb 2017 - Jul 2017Jacksonville, Florida AreaIt was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. A typical day, if i'm working in town, would be to wake up around five, do my morning routine, re-check my gear and schedule and leave around six. Arrive at the location around 7 and begin set up. Around 8am i start photographing the first child, my goal is to be done by lunch/nap time. which is around 11-12p. my lunch break is spent preparing the accounts for sale to the parents, usually from around 3-6pm. this typically took about an hour, and left me anywhere from 2-3 hours to kill.by 2:30pm, i'm back at the center setting up my tablets for sale to the parents. this is where you have to be personable and kick in the sales genes. hopefully, you've taken cute pictures of these adorable children that the parents love. my favorite part was seeing the reactions and hearing "how did you get them to smile like that??" at the directors discretion, or your own, you are done once the last child has been picked up and you head home to upload your sales data. This job was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed it immensely, but in the end, it is more or less "seasonal"...as in, I was out of work for the summer months. I had to leave and take more stable employment elsewhere. -
