In my current Senior Planner role, I coordinate land use planning entitlement processes, write plans and staff reports, and make recommendations to local boards (i.e., Town Council, Planning Board, and an appeals board). I have strict regulatory deadlines established by local law and state statute that require me to review development applications for completeness as well as compliance with local development standards–all the while corresponding with applicants–which is then presented both in a staff report and a formal presentation to the appropriate local board.

Grant program focused on the following goals:• Maintain regional expertise and updated information regarding socioeconomical and environmental issues in Ukraine used to teach an introductory, open-source-GIS course at the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering (“the University”) for fifteen students and faculty.• Participate as a team member with the University and Earth Observing System (EOS) – Ukraine in an urban land use project that uses neural networks and open-source data for automatic classification. • Provide guidance to colleagues and students at the University.• Coordinate with local non-governmental organization to lead a 10-day environmental decision making and natural resource management seminar.

Puebla De Zaragoza Area, Mexico

Major achievements include:• Managed and provided guidance for municipalities’ local coordinators and stakeholders associated with municipal land use planning projects in the State of Puebla, Mexico, including recommendations for amendments to technical planning documents.• Served as the Planning Department’s liaison to the local authorities in three municipalities in Puebla and in a Technical Advisory Group regarding their land use planning processes.• Conducted and analyzed nineteen interviews with land use professionals and municipal administrators around the State of Puebla in order to summarize and clarify the best management practices, strategies, and lessons for land use planning – such as increasing social inclusion in municipal decision-making processes.• Mentored fifteen environmental professionals from various organizations in an introductory cartography and geographic information systems course using Quantum GIS and Garmin BaseCamp. Nine participants successfully completed the course and demonstrated increased knowledge.• Mentored eleven environmental professionals from various organizations in an intermediate geospatial analysis with geographic information systems course using Quantum GIS. Two participants audited the course; eight participants successfully completed the course and demonstrated increased knowledge.• Organized and planned two national, capacity-building, USAID-funded GIS conferences and presented on participatory GIS, cartographic design, and global positioning systems for over forty professionals in environmental fields in Mexico.• Administered and directed funding from USAID to develop, organize, and plan a summer camp for thirty primary school students, four primary school teachers, and two outreach coordinators with the Mexican National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics.See Description of Service below for detailed summary of projects and achievements.

My lesson topics ranged from wildlife to spatial planning; using Project Wild, Project WET, and Project Learning Tree to inform my planning.
