Black Jaguar Foundation• Assisted the Black Jaguar Foundation with its landscape governance and landowner engagement strategies, including preparation of a social monitoring protocol. The BJF is implementing a large-scale forest corridor restoration project in the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado.Environmental Leadership and Training Initiative (ELTI) and Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (IPÊ)• Provided consulting services and support for development of an online course in Portuguese on forest restoration monitoring for adaptive management. Content preparation and editing, research, translation, and student support. Content preparation support also provided for an international online certificate program on landscape restoration.Union of Concerned Scientists• Provided research assistance to the Tropical Forests and Climate Initiative by producing a report reviewing recent literature on deforestation and degradation in the Brazilian Cerrado and a report synthesizing NGO exposés and media coverage of bad environmental and social practices in cattle, sugar, soy, pulp and paper, and rubber supply chains.• Provided research assistance on the Tropical Forests and Climate Initiative Palm Oil Campaign.Independent Clients• Conducted research for National Geographic photographer on current issues associated with deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon for grant proposal preparation and future photography project in the region.• Permaculture and agroforestry design on private landholdings. Mapping (QGIS) species inventory, planting design.• Collaborated with an association of traditional peoples in coastal São Paulo State on a proposal for the establishment of a native tree seedling nursery for income generation and revitalization of traditional knowledge (pro-bono). Project grant proposal chosen as finalist in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Climate CoLab 2016 competition.

Performed Portuguese to English translation of academic articles in the fields of agroecology, agronomy, anthropology, botany, environmental policy, ecology, forestry, and horticulture.

Collected data with a team of 3 other social scientists for the “Citywide Social Assessment of Natural Areas” project (NYC Urban Field Station, USDA Forest Service and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation). Methods included interviews, qualitative and quantitative field observations, and photo documentation. Over 1,000 interviews conducted and 9,000 acres of Parks land surveyed.

• Implemented with a five-person team a phase of “Reforestation with Native Species in the Atlantic Forest Biome,” a joint project of The Nature Conservancy Brazil, the USP-ESALQ Ecology and Forest Restoration Laboratory (LERF), and Bioflora and funded by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).• Prospected, assessed, and mapped areas to be restored (60 hectares), 85% on small farmer property.• Prepared four reports, which entailed map-making, economic analysis, and development of restoration models prioritizing native species with economic potential.• Realized participatory workshops with farmers involved, which included development of restoration models, choice of species, and planting and maintenance trainings. Farmers became more engaged and interested in the project as a result of the workshops and trainings.

Conducted social-ecological research on the social and policy barriers to the development of a novel non-timber forest product, fruit pulp-based products from the juçara palm, Euterpe edulis. Fellowship activities included interview-based fieldwork with smallholder farmers, participation in the Laboratory of Tropical Silviculture under Dr. Pedro Brancalion, presentations, and participation in relevant regional meetings and conferences.

Conducted forest ecology research on hemlock woolly adelgid, masting species regeneration, and oak regeneration after silvicultural treatments, Yale-Myers School Forest. Research assistant to Dr. Mark Ashton. Collected data in field, organized and analyzed past data, and updated maps (ArcGIS).

Contributed to the Tropical Native Species Reforestation Information Clearinghouse (TRIC) database (http://reforestation.elti.org) by creating profiles of restoration literature and of native tree species and conducting archival research on Southeast Asian tree species and colonial logging. Nearly 300 species researched.

Conducted independent, social-ecological research for master’s thesis on swidden agricultural practices of traditional peoples living within and around a protected area, the Estação Ecológica de Juréia-Itatins (EEJI). Methods included interviews, participant observation, ethnography, and documentation of decreased agro-biodiversity since creation of the EEJI.

Contributed to digitization of herbarium collection using the EMu Museum Management System. Performed other maintenance work such as specimen filing and restoration.

• Conducted research and developed campaigns, with a focus on campaigns to stop construction of new coal-fired power plants, to promote Green Jobs, and to pass state-level carbon cap legislation.• Developed and managed internships, website, web-based advocacy, and phonebanks. Interfaced with state legislators and gave presentations to government bodies. Prepared written materials for reports, the media, and campaigns. • Collaborated with Navajo and other Native American environmental and social justice organizations and with other groups focused on advocacy, such as the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Center for Civic Policy (Albuquerque, NM).

Sold plant and indoor gardening equipment, performed plant care and propagation, and assisted with store design and with customer gardening project design.
