His research focused on the hydrodynamics of the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter.During his PhD, Aquamarine Power Ltd. was created to develop the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter concept commercially and is now known as Oyster®. Alan joined Aquamarine Power Ltd. in January 2009 after his PhD and became a Senior Research Engineer working on various aspects of the development of Oyster, such as performance and loading. Alan founded Rockall Research in 2015 to support developers in the marine renewables industry. The research focused on understanding the hydrodynamics of the Oyster wave energy converter. The work optimised the oscillator dimensions to improve the power absorption of the device. An extensive physical modelling programme was undertaken and supported by numerical studies. Finally wave climate data was used to estimate the power capture of Oyster.
