His research focused on the hydrodynamics of the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter.During his PhD, Aquamarine Power Ltd. was created to develop the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter concept commercially and is now known as Oyster®. Alan joined Aquamarine Power Ltd. in January 2009 after his PhD and became a Senior Research Engineer working on various aspects of the development of Oyster, such as performance and loading. Alan founded Rockall Research in 2015 to support developers in the marine renewables industry. An extensive physical modelling programme was undertaken and supported by numerical studies. Finally wave climate data was used to estimate the power capture of Oyster.
