Alan Akira, MD is a board certified psychiatrist and the founder of Mugen Psychiatry, a practice that partners with facilities to care for patients in and around Chicago, IL. His mission is to collaborate with leading clinicians to raise the standards in mental healthcare.He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Science and Technology Honors Program with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology. He completed medical school at the University of South Alabama, serving as class president, graduating as a Gold Humanism Scholar, and recipient of the Medical Alumni Association Leadership Award. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center. There, he served as the founding chief of Emergency Psychiatry and co-founding chief of Medical Student Education. He was the recipient of the Rush Emergency Medicine Consultant of The Year in 2020, for his consummate demonstration of the Rush ICARE values (Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence) in relation to the professional, efficient, time-sensitive, collegial manner in which he responds and behaves as a consultant to the emergency department, promoting the best care for Rush Emergency department patients. His work as an educator has been recognized as the recipient of the Aesculapius Award, presented by the graduating medical student class of 2021 to a single member of the housestaff demonstrating excellence in clinical education. In the Fall of 2021, he was awarded "Resident Physician of the Year" by the Illinois Psychiatric Society, a branch of the American Psychiatric Association which recognizes a member of the IPS who best represents in the view of colleagues and teachers, the ideals of being a dedicated psychiatric trainee.In 2023, he was awarded the Roeske Award for Teaching by the APA for outstanding and sustained contributions to medical education on a national level. Additionally, he works with Cook County as an independent medical examiner, offering expert medical opinions in psychiatry.
