Alan Baldwin Email and Phone Number
An inspirational leader with a long career in IT, my greatest achievement building and developing an organisation with an enviable reputation, that was ultimately acquired, and I'm now back working for the new management team, helping to accelerate their business in their key partnet channels.I have 20+ years as a SaaS service provider, cloud computing, unified communications, and compliance, delivering high-quality solutions to enterprise and mid-size organisations. In my time as Managing Director of Applicable, the company evolved and grew in the fast-moving cloud, SaaS and collaboration sectors. Revenues and staff grew ten-fold, cash generative I. All but one planned year, culminating in an exit in 2016 to Arkadin (a division of NTT). I continued in my role post-transaction for four years before leaving for a short break and then returning to work as a freelance consultant, working in compliance and helping organizations build better businesses.I'm a strong business and respected people leader and a great communicator internally and externally at all levels. My success is founded on building great customer and partner relationships, delivering high-quality services to global enterprises and partner channels, most recently based on Microsoft Teams (with voice integration and migration services), and integrating with the broader Microsoft 365 services.I've worked in support, sales, marketing and software and SaaS product management and I bring those experiences to general management and strategic development. I’m proud of my reputation for leading a business where people were proud to work and delivered exceptional service to customers - always evolving to meet the demands of technology, customer service, and market requirements. After a couple of years working as a freelance consultant, I’m keen to return to being part of a committed, like-minded team, working together towards a set of common challenging goals.

Managing DirectorApplicable Nov 2001 - Jun 2021Bristol, United KingdomI led Applicable to be an industry-leading Unified Communications (UC) cloud service provider, delivering Microsoft Office 365 Modern Workplace, Teams and Skype for Business to enterprise organisations. The organisation grew to deliver a global service delivery model, with offices in the Europe (UK), US, and APAC, with more than 400,000 users under management.Incredibly proud of our talent, Applicable achieved Best Companies Index 2* accreditation.Under my leadership, Applicable's revenues increased 10 fold, and from 15 staff to 120, eventually leading and managing a business sale in 2016 to a division of NTT.I built and led a strong leadership team that was respected by the organisation. I am passionate about attention to detail, customer service, and building a positive and supportive culture in the organisation. The personality of the company (as perceived by employees, partners, and customers) was key to building a high-performance organisation and attracting and retaining the best talent in the industry.Comfortable with leadership and motivation, I also work in a hands-on style to bring my sales, product management and marketing skills to support and develop the organisation.Specialising in providing cloud unified communications services - delivering end-to-end quality of service for voice and video service, supported with professional services to deliver complex integration and migration projects, helping customers to realize the return on investment of their UC investments, with wide adoption and ongoing service quality.Applicable built partnerships with a number of global systems integrator and telco partners to service end customer requirements for UC and other collaboration services. To meet the expectations of our customers and partners, Applicable achieved and retained ISO 27001 certifications for all of its operations. -
Product ManagerBt Jul 1996 - Oct 2001London, United KingdomI worked at BT as a Product Manager, managing cloud-hosted Lotus Notes Domino and Microsoft Exchange as very early SaaS offerings. I migrated BT's service delivery from third-party providers Hewlett Packard and Digital Equipment to a BT-owned infrastructure and service model. I delivered 24x7 application support services, generating standalone revenues and other network services pull-through revenues for BT.I provided extensive solution selling support to BT's various sales channels - enterprise, government, and mid-size - to drive revenue for my product and product line, to move it into a position from early-stage cloud investment to a product delivering a positive contribution to the organisation. This required focus on defining the product offer, strong go to market efforts, reducing costs and developing a strong sales model. The most enjoyable part of the product management role, is that ultimately the buck stops with you, whether it's completing customer proposals, presenting them, defining the product offer, building business cases or helping to manage significant incidents (and their aftermath). -
Technical Sales Manager, Product Marketing ManagerLotus Development May 1990 - Jun 1996Staines - MiddlesexEMEA Product Marketing Manager - Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows and Lotus NotesSuite.EMEA Product Sales - Competitive technical sales lead for Lotus Notes and Domino.Technical Sales Manager - Lotus UK and EMEA. Lead a successful and well respected technical sales team, working with the organisation's largest clients (by revenue). Nominated for and attended Achievers' Club. Marketing and event support, strategic selling.Systems Engineer - presales technical support for Lotus software, specialist in non-PC platforms and PC integration (Lotus 1-2-3 for VAX/VMS, Lotus 1-2-3 for ALL-IN-1, Lotus 1-2-3 for IBM VM and MVS, Lotus 1-2-3 for UNIX.I joined Lotus (a US software vendor) to fulfil a technical sales role from a career which was based in corporate UK IT support. It was something of a baptism of fire! Learning how to present your product to audiences small and large was a big step up from discussing service incidents mostly within the team in Barclays and British Gas!I joined a very professional and talented team and the learning curve was steep. Lotus helped my to understand strategic selling, to understand what was important to the customer, and how to present and communicate at all levels.I'm proud to say that I rose to manage the team that I joined before stepping off to work in Product Marketing and sales training and education. -
Global Systems ManagerBarclays Bank Nov 1989 - May 1990I was a senior member of Barclays' Global System Management Team, implementing, managing, and supporting the global corporate email platform, 24x7 from the UK. I was a Digital VAX/VMS system manager, system programmer, and ALL-IN-1 and X.400 administrator.Carrying an out-of-hours pager, responding to incidents raised from anywhere in the organisation with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility. Email is a 'canary' application - meaning that although the underlying cause of an incident may lie elsewhere, email is the most-used application where an issue may surface. This required a very broad technical understanding of the infrastructure, network, and software components which built the service. This is something which has characterised my career ever since. -
Senior Systems AnalystBritish Gas Jul 1983 - Oct 1989I joined British Gas from university - joining an engineering team beginning to design and deploy computer systems for tecnical and business management. We worked on early microcomputer systems and software and integreted these with data from the corporate mainframe databases. The systems we deployed were CP/M-80, CP/M-86, UNIX, built in MS-BASIC, DR Basic and in some cases assembler (for real time control applications).I transitioned from the engineering division to the IT team to become a senior systems analyst to become a key member of the team that implemented and managed the corporate email platform in the Northwest region, based on Digital VAX/VMS System Management and networking, DECmail, ALL-IN-1, X.400.
