The trajectory of my life changed dramatically when I moved to Tulia, Texas with my wife and three children. Shocked to learn that forty-six people (thirty-nine of them African American) had been indicted on the uncorroborated word of a corrupt undercover officer, I made a dramatic transition from Baptist pastor to criminal justice reform advocate. Since January 2000 I have served as executive director of Friends of Justice. Our organizing in Tulia, Texas led to the formation of a broad coalition of advocacy organizations and pro bono attorneys that eventually exposed a corrupt sting, freed dozens of people from Texas prisons, changed Texas evidentiary laws and led to the disbanding of over fifty mismanaged narcotics task forces throughout Texas. This victory laid a solid foundation for fifteen years of bipartisan criminal justice reform in the Lone Star State.Building on our success in Texas, Friends of Justice initiated two narrative campaigns in Louisiana. We helped overturn the wrongful conviction of an innocent housewife and three of her sons in a fraudulent federal case built on inmate snitch testimony. Then, in Jena, Louisiana, we built a successful Tulia-style coalition in support of six African American high school students who had been grossly overcharged when racial tensions in the community led to a violent incident at the High School. In recent years, noting the inability of the American church to bring a moral voice to public policy debates, Friends of Justice has added a public education strategy to our narrative campaign work.
