Advising clients on industry best practises to take unwanted costs out of their businesses, we develop and provide on-line training courses on Cost Engineering Awareness and will support an array of workshops from VA/VE to strategy costing. Additionally, where required we provide cost estimates to help our clients to find opportunities with their current and future products. Part of my responsibilities are to Control the financials of our company as well as to ensure compliance with all regulations.

Essex, Uk

Global Commodity Manager Manual Transmissions & Powertrain Installations, Cost Estimating (Ford Motor Company, UK)Responsible for $12 billion of Turnover, with 8 managers and 40 cost estimators Globally, in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, India, China, North America, South Africa and Russia reporting to me. Additionally I am the UK Office manager responsible for 6 managers and 54 cost estimators who cover Interior/Engine commodities and Process/Forward Model co-ordination as well as my core responsibilities of transmissions and Powertrain Installation components. My teams were responsible to provide piece/tool cost estimates in support of Forward/Current model programs, competitor vehicle tear-downs/current model supplier negotiations with our supply-base and provide support with cost estimating data on new sourcing opportunities and new technologies. I was part of a Global management team of 4 which included the Global Directors for Engineering/Purchase and the Finance manager for Transmissions and Powertrain Installation commodities. I would also be required to travel out to my global locations in support of annual Gapweek events.

Basildon Laindon

Responsible for 5 supervisors and 25 cost estimators, covering Interior/Exterior/Powertrain commodities. My team were responsible to produce cost estimates for tooling and piece cost in support of Forward and current model programs; additionally they would support supplier negotiations and approve tool-orders where the supplier would be paid based on their submissions. I would support local Gapweek events to discuss gaps generated by my cost estimators of cost estimate versus price.

Dunton/Laindon

Responsible to produce current model financials to support European Operating Committee weekly reviews, additionally I managed a group of German based finance analysts who were responsible for validating vehicle bills of materials to support 9+3 forecasts. I was also the finance leader to the electrical commodity group, responsible for producing weekly reports and ensuring the team were delivering their commercial and design forecast commitments. I was part of a team of 4 which included the Purchasing/Engineering managers and the business leader for the electrical commodity teams. I was also responsible to produce the financials for the 5 year commodity business plans.

Cologne Area, Germany

Responsible for 8 chassis cost estimators and C Car forward model programs, my team were responsible to produce estimates for tooling and piece cost to support forward/current model programs, additionally they would support tooling negotiations and competitor vehicle teardowns. I was based in Merkenich, Cologne, Germany and additionally responsible to support the C Car launch team based in Saarlouis, my team and myself would support this on a 2 day a week basis. My team would ensure late engineering fixes going into the vehicle during launch would be costed and would meet our value for money estimate which would involve negotiations with our suppliers to settle these costs.

Trafford House/Basildon

Responsible for 12 cost estimators and Engine forward model programs, my team were responsible to produce estimates for tooling and piece cost in support of forward/current model/Powertrain Installation and engine programs. My team would support new engine launches at all engine plants within Ford of Europe providing tooling and piece cost estimates to ensure value for money on late engineering or launch changes, which would involve negotiations with our suppliers to settle these costs.

Trafford House/Basildon

Responsible for 10 cost estimators supporting core commodities, Seats, Instrument Panel, Exhausts, Air Induction, Glass, Labels & Decals and Periphery Frames. My team were responsible to provide piece cost and tooling estimates to support forward/current model programs.

Southfields/Laindon

Responsible for 6 cost estimators supporting, Lighting, HVAC, AC, Audio, Engine Modules and Instrument Panel commodities. My estimators would provide estimates for tooling and piece cost in support of the account manager providing pricing for quotes to Ford Motor Company. Additionally my team would using cost estimates negotiate pricing with our 2nd tier suppliers to ensure value for money on components being supplied to our 7 plants in Europe. ACD later on became Visteon after I moved on

Trafford House/Basildon

Responsible for providing piece cost and tooling estimates for all seats in every European Ford Vehicle to support Forward/Current model, additionally provided support to our commodity buyers when negotiating piece costs and tooling with our suppliers. Set-up the first cost estimates for Just in time seats, developed cost models to estimate foam parts and reduced supplier costs across all vehicles in excess of $100 million.

Dunton/Laindon

Responsible for providing piece cost, tooling cost and facility costs for all new models and any engineering changes for in-house tooling and facilities. I would provide engineers costs for “what if studies” for changes to the stampings on all ford vehicles, additionally I would provide costs for competitor vehicle teardowns, I was responsible for all stamped parts as a part of a team of 6 specialists.

Aveley Plant/South Ockendon

Responsible for developing new processes for seat installations within the Ford European plants, I would procure tooling for use in our plants for foamed parts from our supply-base, additionally I would be responsible for commissioning any new tools bought for our plants. This would require me to be at the plant site for the period the tools were being commissioned which would require me to work the supplier toolmaker and the plant installation engineers. When changes to existing parts were required I would produce updated plant layouts and if necessary re-write operation timing or re-calculate plant minutes.

Cologne Area, Germany

Responsible for developing cost estimates for stamping tools used in our Ford European plants. I would estimate Stamping tools, checking fixtures and framing fixtures and discuss the hours and materials with the receiving plant. This could result in a negotiation as the plants had fixed views on how many hours and material would be required to manufacture their tools in our tool-rooms. I was based in the Niehl plant in Cologne, I had to write all my estimates in German and negotiate the costs in German with our tool-room personnel.

Aveley Plant South Ockendon

Responsible for developing cost estimates for stamping tools used in our Ford European plants. I developed new estimating standards for machining, using parametric costing methodology. I would estimate Stamping tools, checking fixtures and framing fixtures and discuss the hours and materials with the receiving plant. This could result in a negotiation as the plants had fixed views on how many hours and material would be required to manufacture their tools in our tool-rooms. I was based in the Aveley plant in Essex, I had to negotiate my estimates with our tool-room personnel. Additionally I would give future costs for new car programs or for what if studies.

Dagenham Stamping Plant/Dagenham

4 year press tool-making apprenticeship, 2 years in the trade school and 2 years within the Dagenham tool-rooms. Completed my apprenticeship in 1977 after that I became a fully qualified tool-maker and built new stampings tools.
