I am a serial entrepreneur with greater than a half-century of experience in the development and operation of multi-location endeavors within several different industries. Initially serving as a member of the third generation of leadership at Carter Lumber, a multistate retail building material chain founded by my grandfather, Warren E Carter, during the depression. As a Regional President, my primary responsibilities were expand the presence of the company in eastern Pennsylvania and Virginia.I left the company in 1983 to pursue my own dreams, which included the purchase and operation of two radio stations, founding a 501(c)3 non-profit, and eventually becoming Chairman and CEO of Voice-Tel Enterprises, Inc., a 250 location voice messaging service bureau franchise company. A two time member of the Inc. 500, Voice-Tel was sold to Premiere Technologies in 1997, after which I engaged in a number of private consulting placements before (together with a partner from Voice-Tel), purchased a controlling interest in University Instructors, Inc. in 2001.For the next 12 years I became integrally involved in the K-12 education services industry, eventually serving a Chairman and CEO as University Instructors, Inc. blossomed into a multi-state tutoring services company (ranked in the Inc. 500) that supplied creative solutions to K-12 education leading to measurable positive student outcomes. In November of 2013, my partner and I sold our interest in University Instructors, Inc. to Public Consulting Group of Boston, MA.I once again returned to my consulting practice at Ventures Management, Inc. in addition to founding Alacar Properties, LLC, through which I purchased, upgraded and leased multiple townhouses in Staunton, Virginia. In January 2017, I entered Union Institute & University, successfully earning an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Ethical and Creative Leadership in June 2023.I have reengaged with my consulting practice (which had been on hiatus while I earned my Ph.D.), with a focus on providing consulting and mentoring services to entrepreneurial start-ups, assisting them to develop foundational components for future success. My skillsets are development of Vision and Mission Statements; integration of Core Values; establishing ethical, financial, and operational controls; and assuring accountability through effective governance structures. I am also interested in serving as a member of the Board of Directors for both start-up and established organizations. My 50+ years of experience allows me to offer unique perspectives to corporate governance.
